Hydraulic cylinders for earthmoving applications

On construction sites worldwide, mobile equipment operates in extreme conditions such as dust, dirt, water and cold. Liebherr offers robust, reliable and application‑specific hydraulic cylinders engineered for long‑term, continuous use.

Frequent load changes are a major challenge for mobile and crawler excavators. Liebherr’s proven components handle these stresses reliably, enhancing both efficiency and operational safety.

The 380‑bar series is ideal for highly dynamic mobile applications. With 40 base variants and a wide range of options, it provides maximum flexibility for various types of construction equipment.

The versatile Liebherr A 918 mobile excavator is used mainly on urban jobsites and in landscaping. Its powerful hydraulic cylinders enable precise movements during continuous operation.

Wheel loaders

Wheel loaders are high‑performance machines for material handling. Our hydraulic cylinders convert hydraulic pressure into motion and control the lifting, lowering and tilting of the bucket.

Telehandlers

Telehandlers are agile machines for lifting and moving loads at different heights. Our hydraulic cylinders control the extension of the telescopic boom as well as the precise lifting and tilting of the load.

Dump trucks

Dump trucks are rugged transport vehicles used in mining and on large construction sites. Our hydraulic cylinders powerfully raise and lower the dump body to unload material safely and efficiently.

Hydraulic cylinders for piling and drilling equipment

Hydraulic cylinders in piling and drilling equipment generate the force needed to drive piles into the ground or to drill precisely into hard subsurface layers. They enable controlled, powerful movements and ensure high efficiency and stability in demanding construction projects. Their rugged design delivers reliable performance under extreme loads.

Hydraulic cylinders for material handling equipment

Hydraulic cylinders play a central role in material handling equipment, as they are responsible for lifting, lowering, swinging and positioning heavy loads. Reliable sealing technology, regular maintenance and the use of durable materials are essential for the longevity and safety of these systems.

Hydraulic cylinders used in material handling equipment in marine environments are especially robust and corrosion‑resistant. They feature special coatings to withstand the demanding conditions of salty and corrosive surroundings.

Hydraulic cylinders for attachment tools

Hydraulic cylinders for attachments are essential components that enable powerful and precise movements across a wide range of applications. The performance of an attachment plays a major role in the success of a project.

The hydraulic cylinders ensure that buckets, grapples, shears and other tools operate reliably. Their rugged construction is designed to handle high loads and varying operating conditions.

Hydraulic cylinders for scrap shears

Hydraulic cylinders in scrap shears generate tremendous cutting forces to efficiently process metal. They deliver precise, powerful movements that cut through thick and tough material with ease. Their rugged build ensures long service life and dependable performance in heavy‑duty continuous use.

Depending on the application, we can equip our products with the latest technologies, including carbon‑fiber‑reinforced plastics (CFRP) for lightweight hydraulic cylinders and custom sensor solutions integrated into the cylinder.

Mobile and crawler cranes

Powerful, precise movements are essential in crane technology. Our hydraulic cylinders for mobile cranes ensure stable and controlled movement, even when handling heavy loads, supporting the safety and efficiency of crane operations. Their rugged construction ensures long service life under extreme conditions.

The lightweight cylinders combine the benefits of high‑strength materials with an optimised weight design.

Advantages of our integrated valve technology – directly inside the support cylinder:

  • Less pressure loss and improved energy efficiency
  • Compact design
  • Reduced piping
  • Effective reduction of potential failure sources

Mobile cranes: support and luffing cylinders

Hydraulic cylinders are the core of motion control in mobile cranes – they lift, lower and position loads with precision. They also ensure reliable operation under dynamic load conditions.

Support cylinders stabilise the mobile crane and distribute the load evenly across the ground. Their design must provide high load capacity, stiffness and pressure resistance to safely absorb axial and lateral forces. The sealing systems and materials must be engineered to remain reliable under changing loads, temperature variations and environmental conditions.

Mobile cranes: support and luffing cylinders

Luffing cylinders enable the precise positioning of the crane boom. To ensure smooth and controlled load handling, special attention is given to a friction‑optimised design.

The cylinders are also engineered with lightweight construction in mind to move even heavy loads efficiently. This includes the use of high‑strength tube materials.

Crawler cranes: pull and telescopic cylinders

Crawler cranes stand out for their high load capacity and flexibility on jobsites. They are equipped with hydraulic guidance systems that can be telescoped continuously, increasing the crane’s lifting capacity.

Our range includes specialised lightweight cylinders for cranes. Despite their low weight, they meet the highest safety standards. They enable controlled, powerful movements and ensure stability in demanding construction projects. Their rugged construction ensures reliable performance under extreme loads.

Mining

Hydraulic cylinders for mining

In continuous operation under the harshest conditions – hydraulic cylinders for mining excavators must withstand extremely high static and dynamic forces. These demands are met through a rugged, long‑life design and a specialised material selection based on decades of experience. For example, Liebherr manufactures the piston rod from a single high‑strength forged piece.

By reducing weight, especially in the bucket and stick cylinders of a mining excavator, efficiency can be significantly improved. Depending on customer requirements, Liebherr offers various weight‑reduction concepts even for highly dynamic applications, such as the use of carbon‑fiber‑reinforced plastic (CFRP).

Suspensions in dump trucks

Our suspensions in mining haul trucks reliably cushion the loads that occur during the loading and unloading of bulk material and absorb impacts while driving. Their design prevents vibrations from being transmitted uncontrollably to the frame, axles or truck body. This not only improves driving stability and traction on rough terrain but also reduces material fatigue and helps minimise downtime.

Life-Cycle-Management

Both hydraulic cylinders and suspensions for mining applications are designed to be reconditioned up to three times. As a result, the cylinders reach a service life of up to 4 × 12,000 operating hours, while the suspensions operate for up to 80,000 operating hours.
