The pineapple is a tropical fruit that originates from the tropics and subtropics. The pineapple is native to Brazil, Paraguay and Guyana. There are over 100 different varieties, but only a few are traded on the world market. A special feature that hardly anyone knows about pineapples: Botanically speaking, the rough, scaly skin of the pineapple consists of around 200 individual fruits, which can be recognized by the individual scales. This gives the pineapple its characteristic appearance, similar to a pine cone with a green tuft. This is also where the word pineapple comes from.

How healthy is pineapple?
Pineapple is considered a real powerhouse for health. It provides plenty of vitamin C, which strengthens the immune system and protects cells from oxidative stress. The manganese it contains supports energy metabolism and bone health. Also noteworthy among the nutritional values of pineapple is the enzyme bromelain, which can inhibit inflammation, relieve swelling and promote protein digestion – a natural aid for the stomach and intestines. The fruit also contains secondary plant compounds with antioxidant properties that bind free radicals. Its fiber promotes digestion, while its high water content helps keep you hydrated. In tropical countries, pineapple is traditionally used to treat coughs, joint pain and loss of appetite. It also appeals to athletes, as it can help with recovery after training. In short: eating pineapple regularly is a delicious way to provide your body with valuable nutrients.
If you want to eat pineapple regularly, you need to know how long it will keep for. Compared to other tropical fruits, it keeps surprisingly well – at least when the conditions are right. Liebherr has refrigerators with a cellar compartment in its range, where the temperature is 12 °C. Pineapples feel particularly at home here and will stay fresh for 14 days. A whole pineapple will keep in the normal refrigerator compartment for around eight days before it starts to lose its freshness. However, if you store them in the EasyFresh safe of a Liebherr refrigerator, you’ll benefit from better conditions: an air regulation plate ensures high humidity, and the temperature is the same as in the rest of the refrigerator. Thanks to the high humidity, the pineapple stays fresh and aromatic for up to ten days – two days longer than in a normal refrigerator compartment.
*All specifications given are to be considered as guideline values, and depend in each case on the type of foodstuffs and on the proper storage without interruption of the cold chain from harvest/production through to the Liebherr appliance. Should food products have information about minimum shelf life, the date on the packaging always applies.
