Maritime cranes for the wind industry

Liebherr also offers the right solution for the wide range of requirements of the wind power industry in the maritime sector. Cranes and material handling equipment are employed both at harbors and at sea, on crane ships and on floating installation platforms.
The wide range of mobile harbor cranes and ship cranes from Liebherr ideally matches the many different requirements when loading wind power components in harbors. The cranes are used to load and unload ships, low-loaders and goods wagons. This involves heavy cargo such as generators with a lifting capacity of over 70 tonnes or rotor blades with a span of more than 40m. Safety and precision are important factors. In addition to the design of the cranes, the electronic control systems are of utmost importance. These control systems one of the core competencies of Liebherr and are therefore also developed in-house..
Liebherr also offers convincing solutions for constructing wind turbines at sea. The offshore heavy duty cranes feature lifting capacities of up to 3,000 t.
Loading of wind power components at the harbor

Safety and precision are the most important criteria when it comes to transferring heavy loads in the wind power sector. The strengths of the Liebherr mobile harbor cranes are brought to bear here. Independently powered, closed hydraulic circuits employ a minimum of components and combine extremely short reaction times and maximum precision with operating reliability and safety.
The mobile harbor cranes reach maximum lifting capacities of up to 208t. In tandem operation, the patented multi-crane control system SYCRATRONIC® enables lifting capacities of up to 416t. The dynamic anti-collision control system in conjunction with Vertical Line Finder also ensures that work is carried out safely and precisely.
Heavy-duty ship cranes for transportation and loading

Liebherr supplies the CBB series, a separate line of heavy-duty ship cranes, to load and transport wind turbines. These cranes can also be equipped with the dynamic anti-collision control system for enhanced safety in crane operation. The cranes can lift loads of up to 450t.
Erection of offshore wind turbines

Liebherr's offshore heavy duty cranes feature lifting capacities of up to 3,000t and are used to erect wind turbines at sea. All requirements can be catered for: diesel-powered or electric drive units, explosion-protected cranes and cranes for ambient temperatures between +40°C and -50°C, and special lowering depths down to 3,000m below sea level.
Synchronous control for automated tandem lifts

In standard mode, each crane has to be operated by one driver for tandem lifts. The drivers are informed about the main functions of both cranes (e.g. speeds, etc.) on their respective monitors. This enables both crane drivers to control the two cranes independently, but yet coordinated.
A far more efficient variant is the "Automatic Parallel" mode with one person controlling both cranes. In this mode, the traverse remains parallel to the ship or to the initial position, and an automatic control system computes the movements of the jib heads of both cranes. Since the length and hook height difference are kept constant during movement, any unwanted diagonal pull in the cables can be ruled out.
A third option for tandem lifts is the "Automatic Rotation" mode in which the traverse can rotate. The crane driver only has to control the direction or rotation of the traverse, while the control system computes the necessary movement of the jib heads of both cranes.
Dynamic anti-collision control

The dynamic anti-collision control system manages simultaneous movements of two or more cranes. Every crane is fully protected while its performance remains constantly high.
When several cranes work simultaneously, the movements of the individual crane can be controlled based on the current position of the other cranes. The special feature of the dynamic anti-collision system from Liebherr is that it automatically computes the actual position, speed and acceleration of each crane, as well as their load torque limitation. This allows the crane driver to work absolutely safely with maximum flexibility.
Vertical line finder prevents load vibrations

The vertical line finder is an optional control aid for avoiding diagonal pull on the load. This may occur when the distance between the crane driver and the load is too long or when the center of gravity is not symmetrical.
The control system controls the position of the boom by showing the exact vertical rope position before the load is lifted. Since the load does not vibrate, the danger of damage to the load or the crane is minimized. The system also provides greater safety for the crane driver and his environment.

Efficiency for wind farms and individual installations

The economical, high-performance mobile cranes from Liebherr have proved their worth for decades in the construction of wind power plants. The cranes are available in various load capacity classes and are precisely tailored to the needs of the wind power industry. Liebherr faces the development of increasingly powerful installations and increasingly high towers by producing optimised cranes and new boom systems reaching especially high carrying capacities.
Telescopic mobile cranes (LTM) drive on public roads and can therefore be transported extremely economically. They can be quickly erected and only require very little space in this case. The telescopic mobile cranes move from site to site with a retracted telescopic boom on narrow roads at wind parks.
The basic unit of the lattice boom mobile cranes (LG) also moves on public roads. This reduces the number of transportation units compared with lattice boom crawler cranes. The lattice boom mobile crane is used during the erection of wind parks and single installations.

Peak technology for high load capacities

Crawler cranes from Liebherr have proved their worth for decades in the construction of wind power plants. The cranes are available in various load capacity classes and are precisely tailored to the needs of the wind power industry.
Lattice boom crawler cranes (LR series) offer the highest load capacity and lifting height. On suitable terrain they can drive with complete equipment on wide tracks from one wind power plant to another. They can also drive with a full load.
The narrow track lattice boom crawler cranes (LR-W) can move with long boom systems on narrow roads. They can therefore be used efficiently in wind parks.
The LR 1300 SX crawler crane is used primarily in the area of wind turbine assembly and servicing. It is equipped for these operations with a narrow, telescopic undercarriage in order to ensure economical positioning under restricted space conditions.
The LR 1300 SX is driven by a Liebherr diesel engine developing 450kW / 612PS. The crane is equipped with two crane winches which each have a lifting capacity of 15 tonnes and feature high rope speeds for this wire rope hoist. Fast lifts and high lifting performance are therefore attained even with multiple reevings.
Innovation for high performance, mobility and flexibility

One of the characteristic features of the LR 1300 SX is its innovative boom system. In particular, the newly developed design of the SX boom ensures higher lifting capacities which are required during the erection of wind turbines. Additionally, there is a new heavy-duty jib which is 8 m long and is structurally designed for a maximum lifting capacity of 117 t. The heavy-duty jib develops its full capability in conjunction with long booms and derrick equipment. When an 80m main boom is combined as standard with a heavy-duty jib, the LR 1300 SX attains lifting capacities of more than 80t.
The standard width across the tracks of the LR 1300 SX is 8m. However, the undercarriage can be contracted to a width of 4.8m. Automatic track width adjustment enables the crane to travel fully equipped, i.e. including the boom and with full ballasting. The LR 1300 SX therefore offers extraordinary mobility for a machine in this lifting capacity category.

The dismantled LR 1300 SX with a maximum transport width of 3m can be inexpensively transported on standard low-loaders.
The LR 1300 SX is equipped with the latest generation of the Liebherr control system based on CANBUS technology. This system automatically computes the lifting capacities during operations, this ensuring optimum utilization of the crane.

Efficient wind power assembly in low-wind areas

Liebherr has become the first manufacturer of tower cranes to develop a complete package for the low cost, safe erection of wind turbines with hub heights of 110m or more in low-wind areas. Wind turbines can therefore be erected with wind speeds of up to 18m/s. Another advantage of tower cranes is that they can easily be transported and require very little space for erection.
Wind turbine erection specialist: the new 1000 EC-B 125 Litronic Flat-Top crane

With the 1000 EC-B 125 Litronic, Liebherr has developed a crane for very economical erection of wind turbines with hub heights in excess of 120m. The crane offers a new and highly economical hoist solution for wind turbines with hub heights over 120m.
For other applications, e.g. in power station and plant construction, the Flat-Top crane can also be used with radii of 41.5m and 46.5m.

High working speeds
The infinitely adjustable crane drive units ensure high working speeds. Thanks to the MICROMOVE fine positioning mode, concrete rings, nacelles and rotor blades can be positioned and set down with millimeter precision.
Safe, fast climbing
A concept for extremely fast, safe and simple climbing was developed for the 1000 EC-B 125 Litronic. Twice as fast as with conventional climbing equipment, the crane climbs to a free-standing hoist height of over 100m at wind speeds of up to 18m/s.
Safe work with a full view of the load
Tower cranes provide the driver with an ideal view of the load. This makes it easier for the driver and erectors to communicate when erecting wind turbines.
Economical transportation
The transport properties of the new 1000 EC-B 125 Litronic have also been optimized. Most of the various crane sections can be transported using semi-trailers without specialist transport equipment. The boom parts of the large crane can be placed inside the tower elements for transport.
Erection of wind turbines in low-wind areas

Liebherr has developed a special-purpose tower crane for the erection of wind turbines with hub heights of 110m or more in low-wind areas. This crane of the type 630 EC-H 70 Litronic is mounted on the foundations of the wind turbine and is configured in such a way that the necessary lifting height can be reached by guying the crane to the mast at one point only. The 630 EC-H 70 Litronic is therefore capable of lifting loads up to 70t.
Wind power generators in low-wind areas do not normally form part of large wind parks, but are erected in forest areas or regions where access is difficult. Tower cranes provides special advantages in these locations. Firstly, transportation vehicles with special permits are not required for delivery and removal on roads that frequently do not have special surfaces. Secondly, the crane and the wind turbine can erected on a comparatively small surface area.
The 630 EC H 70 Litronic crane achieves a lifting height of 151m with only one guying attached to the wind turbine tower. Up to a lifting height of 93.1m, it operated freestanding for this type of work.
The crane is mounted on a reusable foundation frame. Years later, smaller tower cranes can also be inexpensively mounted there in order to carry out maintenance and repair work on the wind turbine.

Components for the wind industry
Liebherr is the only manufacturer worldwide that is not only able to supply individual components as slewing bearings, slewing drives, electric motors and hydraulic cylinders, but able to supply hydraulic and electromechanical pitch systems and electromechanical yaw systems for wind turbines.
An important element of the cooperation with customers from all over the world is the applied application-specific engineering necessary for adapting and matching the individual components to each other. Liebherr works together with virtually all well-known turbine manufacturers and to date has supplied components for more than 15,000 wind turbines. The product portfolio covers components for 800 kW installations up to solutions for multi-megawatt turbines for offshore wind farms.
Pitch systems

Liebherr produces well-engineered mechanical systems for rotor blade adjustment. Electric pitch systems are based on one or more mechanical gear units with electric motor, which drive a geared large diameter slewing bearing.
Hydraulic pitch systems are based on one or more hydraulic cylinders and a slewing ring bearing without gears to adjust the rotor blade position. In either case, the precise positioning of the rotor blades results in maximum energy yield.
In pitch systems, the following components from the Liebherr portfolio can be applied:

Three-row roller bearings for higher load capacity and more cost efficiency
Wind turbines are growing steadily in an effort to attain higher energy yields. The options of adapting existing designs to the growing dimensions and more demanding load profiles has however limits - particularly in regard to rotor blade bearings. Therefore, in addition to the current single-row and double-row four-point bearings, Liebherr now also offers three-row roller bearings for pitch systems. This highly increases the potential in terms of dimensioning and load capacity.
Yaw systems

Depending on the specific system design, up to twelve or more high-performance planetary gearboxes drive a slewing bearing and ensure precises as well as reliable wind direction tracking. Liebherr configures the entire yaw system, including the necessary electric motors, precisely to the needs of the customers. This guarantees a high level of system availability.
The following components from the Liebherr portfolio are ideally suited for use with yaw systems:

Yaw module concept study
In the course of the last 20 years, variety of parts and complexity have steadily increased within the wind industry. With this study, Liebherr wants to show new ways to achieve more flexible yaw system. The result is a module which integrates all functions of the yaw system in a ready-to-install unit.
The current concept offers a wide range of advantages. It can be easily scaled in terms of size and capacity and adapted to the different turbine platforms. Additionally, the use of standard components across all platforms hold great cost savings potential. Further, the implementation of the yaw system as a ready-to-install module makes it possible to simplify processes for the turbine manufacturer along the entire value chain.

Slewing bearings
The range of Liebherr large diameter slewing bearings covers bearings with a diameter of up to 9,500 mm. For wind turbine pitch- and yaw systems this includes single-row and double-row four-point bearings and three-row roller bearings with internal or external gear. For yaw systems, the portfolio also includes gear rings.

Hydraulic cylinders
Since 1958, the Liebherr Group has been developing and producing hydraulic cylinders at the main site in Kirchdorf an der Iller. The product portfolio ranges from highly durable hydraulic cylinders for dynamic applications, large heavy-duty cylinders and dampers to lightweight and special cylinders. Liebherr benefits from its vast experience in the maritime sector also in the development of cylinders for wind turbines.

Gearboxes
Reliability and precise positioning are the crucial factors for the rotor blade and yaw adjustment drives. Liebherr offers multistage planetary gearboxes for the rotor blade adjustment. If required by the installation constrains, they can also be fitted with an angled increment. Three- to four-stage planetary gearboxes are usually used for yaw adjustment. Up to twelve or more yaw drives per system are installed to transmit the high torques encountered in wind turbines in the multi-megawatt class.

Integrated lubrication system
An integrated lubrication supply for pitch and yaw adjustment gears are an ideal complement to Liebherr's offer in the area of gearboxes. The lubrication system can be used with minimum implementation effort and offers considerable savings compared to the existing systems.

Frequency converter systems
Modern wind turbines require reliable frequency converter systems in order to safely feed the steadily increasing power into the supply network. The liquid-cooled frequency converter system Liduro Wind is therefore specially designed for demanding applications in onshore and offshore wind turbines.
Competences
Based on a continuous quality management and the use of cutting-edge technologies, components by Liebherr meet the highest demands regarding quality and performance.
Product and system expertise

The right design and analysis of a component is decisive for its reliability and service life. For multi-megawatt wind turbines a design using Finite Element Methods (FEM) is essential, as the sensitivity to strain increases the larger the system gets. In addition, defined approval processes for new and further developments ensure optimal product configuration and thus high reliability.
High level of vertical integration

In order to ensure consistent high quality and reliability, all manufacturing processes must be optimally aligned. Hence why Liebherr improves all production processes on an ongoing basis and continually invests in cutting-edge production facilities.
Quality-oriented

Reliable components with a consistently high quality are particularly important for wind turbines in order to avoid long production downtimes and high logistics costs. To ensure that the quality standards achieved in the construction using Finite Element Methods (FEM) and Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) are also maintained in subsequent processes, all company processes are designed to maintain quality.

Quality concrete for wind power installations

The towers of modern wind power generators are made out of prefabricated concrete parts. These concrete components, whose form and strength are subject to extremely high standards, are prefabricated in prefab factories and then assembled at the construction site.
Liebherr concrete mixing systems employing their own mixer systems supply the concrete for these prefabricated parts. They can be connected directly to the production halls and supply the concrete by a bucket conveyor directly from the mixing plant.
The Litronic-MPS process control system in conjunction with the Litronic-FMS moisture measurement system guarantees perfect concrete quality in the correct consistency.
The Liebherr tower mixing systems of the type Betomat and the horizontal series of Betomix systems are both well-suited for the task of producing concrete for wind power tower segments.
