Steel strength meets Liebherr precision with the LR 1300.1 SX crawler crane
Steel erection industry leader, Steel Masters, L.P. chose the Liebherr LR 1300.1 SX crawler crane to meet the needs of large-scale tilt wall erection noting its capacity and ease of transport fulfilled their project requirements.

Structural integrity starts with precision, especially in steel erection and tilt-wall construction. When constructing a building, tilt walls are structurally load-bearing for interior steel and the roof making accurate lifting and placement critical to ensure long-term durability. That is why it is essential to partner with trusted industry leaders like Steel Masters, L.P.
With a variety of cranes in their Houston, Texas based fleet, Steel Masters, L.P. offers more than 40 years of experience in providing commercial construction erection services, such as structural steel, tilt walls, pre-cast, and pre-engineered metal buildings.
The Liebherr LR 1300.1 SX was the perfect option under these conditions. The lifting capacity along with the advantage of easy mobility made the tilt wall erection go safely and smoothly.
On their latest tilt wall erection project site, the Steel Masters team utilized the Liebherr LR 1300.1 SX crawler crane on 3 large buildings totaling 684,000 ft2 and 321 tilt wall panels all placed precisely by the Liebherr crane. Their biggest project challenges included limited site mobility as well as the large size and massive weight of the tilt wall panels.
“The Liebherr LR 1300.1 SX was the perfect option under these conditions. The lifting capacity along with the advantage of easy mobility made the tilt wall erection go safely and smoothly,” said Tyler Drake, Crane Manager for Steel Masters.
The Steel Masters team also utilized MyLiebherr throughout the project. MyLiebherr is a personal customer portal providing access to digital documents, spare parts availability ordering, and real-time customer data. Drake noted, “It [MyLiebherr] helps me in the field more than anything. The online manuals allow me to pull up quick breakdowns on the crane while working on site.”

Powering success
The Steel Masters team identified key criteria for purchasing the crane, including its lifting capacity, ease of assembly and disassembly, and efficient load-out requiring minimal semi-trucks for transport. Meeting these needs, the newest generation of the Liebherr LR 1300.1 SX crawler crane delivers a maximum lifting capacity of 331 USt (300 t) and a maximum hoist height of 554 ft (169 m), while also providing high service availability, compact transport, and self-assembly capabilities. These features make it an ideal solution for Steel Masters, enabling the team to move safely and quickly between Texas-based project sites while keeping costs down and maintaining productivity.

The crawler crane also offers many innovative assistance systems, including ground pressure visualization, calculating current ground pressure of the machine in real time, and precise crane control, developed by Liebherr it includes all operating and control functions of the crane and allows for extremely delicate and secure lifting both of which increase operational safety as well as project efficiency. Additionally, equipped with a new cab design, the crane offers a modern design with many features for high operator comfort including improved airflow, an optimized field of vision, increased noise protection, as well as an orthopedic operator’s seat with integrated heating and cooling ensuring the most comfortable experience for the Steel Master’s operators.

With the Houston-based project now complete and additional steel erection projects underway, the Steel Masters team continues to utilize the Liebherr LR 1300.1 SX, noting, “it’s a great addition to help further our success.”
