Thereby, the Liebherr team pursues an open-technology approach. In the field of internal combustion, the focus of the research and development activities lies on multiple solutions, depending on the needs different fields of application will require in the future.

Evolution of powertrains in off-highway applications

Today, the combustion engine is the most capable and – currently – most sustainable powertrain to drive applications under extreme operating conditions in the off-highway industry. Be it high or low humidity, high altitudes, dusty air, high shocks or vibration levels, the internal combustion engine shows numerous advantages.

However, the goal is to have a multitude of solutions in the future so that each industry can find the solution that suits it. We believe that the picture of the future will be made up of combustion engines, electric batteries and a range of alternative fuels.

Tomorrow's solutions

In regard to exhaust emissions, it is not so much about the combustion engine but the fuel that is used. Combustion engines will no longer be fueled solely by fossil diesel. To enable climate neutrality, fuels from renewable energies or sustainable sources must be used.

As a trends-radar, our Components’ team is constantly analysing emerging technologies and market shifts, ensuring it rises to new challenges with cutting-edge solutions. This approach has led us to explore advanced alternatives, such as ammonia, methanol and ethanol — fuels that hold immense potential for reducing emissions in industries that rely heavily on powerful machinery and engines.
