Make your own dog ice cream – recipes, information and tips

Dogs can regulate their body temperature almost exclusively via their tongue. In summer, it can get very hot for them in high temperatures. A delicious dog ice cream can then be a pleasant and, above all, tasty way to cool down. Here we’ll show you various recipes with meat, fish, fruit and vegetables – there is something for every preference. In the third section you will find some alternatives for sensitive dog stomachs.

Brief overview: make your own dog ice cream

  • Use dairy products as a base for dog ice cream, e.g. natural yoghurt, quark, cottage cheese or cream cheese.
  • Water and meat stock are a lactose-free alternative.
  • Add foods that your dog particularly likes to eat.
  • Stir or puree the mixture.
  • Pour the dog ice cream mixture into suitable containers and place them in the freezer for a few hours.

Dog ice cream: the basis – an initial guide

Various dairy products, such as natural yoghurt, quark, cottage cheese or cream cheese, are suitable as a base for dog ice cream. However, you should check with your vet beforehand whether your dog can tolerate lactose (milk sugar). Alternatively, you can also use water or meat stock.

Now you can get creative. You can add anything that your dog tolerates and likes to eat to the basic mixture for your dog ice cream. These can be different types of fruit and vegetables or meat, for example. In the next two sections, we will give you some recipes to try for starters.

Depending on the ingredients you have chosen, it may be enough to stir everything together – if the ingredients are firmer, it may be necessary to puree them. If your mixture is too firm, you can add a little water, meat stock or oil. The latter also provides your dog with some healthy fats.

Finally, simply pour the dog ice cream mixture into suitable containers and place them in the freezer for a few hours. Ice cube trays, rinsed yoghurt pots or small muffin tins are suitable, for example.

Tips for dog ice cream for sensitive dog stomachs

For any dog ice cream, only use ingredients that your dog tolerates well. In the case of new foods, possible allergies should be ruled out beforehand by a vet. If you want to give your dog a portion of dog ice cream for the first time, you should first test with a small amount to see whether he/she tolerates the cold treat well.

It is also important that your dog does not gobble up the ice cream. To prevent this, you can spread the ice cream mixture in or on a rubber dog toy and freeze it. This way, your dog can lick the ice cream out bit by bit instead of devoring it.

Does your dog have many intolerances? You can then simply mix or puree the wet or dry food with a little water or stock and freeze this mixture to make dog ice cream.

If you don’t want to use several different ingredients for dog ice cream, you can simply freeze some stock or yoghurt, for example. Even a normal ice cube made of water offers a pleasant cooling effect in hot temperatures.

You can add a small treat or a piece of fruit to the stock or water so that your dog is particularly motivated to lick up all the ice cream.
