Precision at scale: The Ryan Companies boost quarry operations with the Liebherr HS 8300.2
When reliable operation was the only option for The Ryan Companies, they turned to Liebherr for the solution. As an umbrella company for Ryan Incorporated Mining, the parent company expanded their production of construction aggregates at Star Quarries, a subsidiary of Ryan Incorporated Mining in Southern Florida. This enhancement required bolstering their fleet of draglines with a machine that was built for the increased production, the Liebherr HS 8300.2 dragline.
Owned by Ryan Incorporated Mining, Star Quarries is a high-capacity quarry located in South Bay, Florida, serving as a significant source of native material production and produces over 1 million tons of material per year including limestone, shore rip rap and concrete screenings. With production of this size, Star Quarries has become a premiere source for construction aggregates, providing quality products and consistently growing to meet market demands in the South Florida region.
We’re excited to modernize our fleet with the Liebherr HS 8300.2. This purchase marks one step taken for Ryan Mining to move toward larger excavation capabilities and projects.
Ryan Incorporated Mining was looking for a machine they could depend on for the lifetime of the mine at Star Quarries. When making the decision to expand their fleet Patrick Ryan, President of Ryan Incorporated Mining, highlights that they chose the Liebherr HS 8300.2 dragline due to its significant uptime and increased fuel efficiency. As one of Liebherr’s largest duty cycle crawler cranes, this machine was designed precisely for the high-volume material excavation needed to increase production at the Star Quarries mine.
Ryan notes, “We’re excited to modernize our fleet with the Liebherr HS 8300.2. This purchase marks one step taken for Ryan Mining to move toward larger excavation capabilities and projects.”
Family-owned and operated since 1884, The Ryan Companies began as an earthwork contractor, eventually expanding operations to include several sectors including mining. Ryan now operates across the United States, with several locations in Florida and one in Buffalo Valley, Tennessee. With a commitment to adapt to the market and their companies’ needs, Ryan takes pride in utilizing the latest technologies and state-of-the-art equipment in the industry.
Dynamic design
The HS 8300.2 dragline is designed for heavy duty material handling and can be operated with dragline buckets with enormous volume capacities. The robust steel fabrication of the machine provides it with an extended service life, making it the perfect addition to Ryan’s fleet of dragline cranes.

Ryan emphasizes, “When it comes to managing a quarry inventory, excavation is nearly always the primary bottleneck. Having a reliable machine that can keep you digging is one key to being successful.”
The performance of the HS 8300.2 is further increased due to the innovative hybrid drive Pactronic® built into the design. Utilizing the surplus energy produced during operation allows the Ryan team not only to have an impressive power boost during excavation but also cost savings across the lifetime of the machine. Paired with the reliable and easy-to-service diesel engine specifically designed for the HS series, this machine provides increased hydraulic power and turnover, resulting in lower fuel consumption.
As these two historic family-owned businesses work together, progress follows. This latest addition marks the first Liebherr machine in Ryan Mining’s fleet and the beginning of a strong partnership between the companies. The innovative technology built into their new machine paired with their strategic growth not only sets The Ryan Companies apart but also sets them up for continued success within the mining industry.
