Storing meat: how to preserve it and keep it fresh for a long time

Although consumption of meat has decreased slightly in recent years, for many it is still a regular feature on their plates. Different methods of preparation such as barbecuing, stewing or boiling transform meat into a versatile ingredient for various meals. Read on to find out what you should look out for when buying and preparing meat, and the best way to store it.

The key points

  • Meat provides high-quality protein and important vitamins and minerals, such as iron and zinc.
  • Experts recommend consuming no more than 300–600 g per week.
  • Meat should be stored in the coolest part of the fridge, as it is easily perishable.
  • A Liebherr BioFresh Meat & Dairy safe is the perfect place to store meat. Meat stays fresh significantly longer here than in a normal fridge compartment.
  • Meat can be frozen for longer storage – poultry and pork for up to six months, beef for up to twelve months.

Storing meat in the fridge – what you need to know

Before you start processing the meat, it should be washed thoroughly – but not for too long, otherwise the goodness is leached out. Once you have done this, dab the meat with some kitchen paper to prevent water from getting into the pan and spraying up. For the best taste, be sure to sear the meat using heat-resistant oil.

Bear in mind that meat needs to be stored in the fridge as its high protein and water content makes it very perishable. This is why it is important to keep meat in the coolest place possible. A covering also protects the meat from premature spoilage. By taking all in this into account, you can keep beef, pork and poultry in the fridge for about a day. Thanks to innovative technologies, Liebherr appliances extend the shelf life of meat. The BioFresh Meat & Dairy compartment keeps pork, beef and poultry fresh at the optimum temperature of just above 0 degrees – for up to six days. Precise humidity and temperature control and technologies such as BioFresh preserve taste, nutrients and quality, which means less food is wasted.

You can easily freeze any leftover meat. This extends the shelf life of poultry and pork to up to six months, and of beef for even up to a full twelve months. The freezing should occur as quickly as possible in order to allow uniform ice crystal formation. Liebherr’s freezers also provided support here with technologies such as NoFrost. Protect your freezer from unwanted icing – so that you can store your meat for longer
