Blackberries: healthy and delicious

These aggregate fruits have a pleasant sweet and sour taste and an intense, fruity aroma that varies slightly depending on their degree of ripeness. Blackberries are extremely low in calories, with 44 calories per 100 g, and contain around 1 g of protein, 1 g of fat and 10 g of carbohydrates, of which around 5 g is sugar. Their high fibre content of around 5 g per 100 g is particularly noteworthy, as it aids digestion. Blackberries also provide significant amounts of vitamin C, vitamin E, potassium, magnesium and provitamin A. In combination with secondary plant substances, these ingredients make blackberries a nutrient-rich power fruit.

Blackberries are suitable as an ingredient in smoothies, jellies and jams or as a component of sauces. Rote Grütze is, of course, the classic dessert that uses these berries. With cold custard or cream, the jelly tastes especially delicious.

Did you know that not only the blackberry fruit with its many health-promoting ingredients (high magnesium and carotene content, lots of phenolic acids and flavonoids) is a healthy snack, but also the leaves of the blackberry bush? They can be used to prepare a tasty tea, which is especially effective for mild diarrhoea.

However, folk medicine also attributes healing properties to blackberry leaf tea for inflamed mucous membranes, fever, skin rashes and other conditions. To prepare blackberry leaf tea, simply pour 150 ml of boiling water over two heaped teaspoons of blackberry leaves (approx. four grams) and leave to steep for ten minutes. Then strain, enjoy and wait for the benefits to kick in.

Blackberries: outstanding nutritional values and storage tips

Fresh blackberries are very delicate and should be eaten or prepared as soon as possible after purchase. Soft fruit will only keep for about a day in the fridge compartment of your appliance at 7 °C. Blackberries stay fresh for up to three days in the BioFresh Fruit & Vegetable safe. This is because it has high humidity and a temperature of just above 0 °C.

In order to get the perfect blackberries, it’s important when shopping to make sure that the blackberry skin doesn’t already have any juice spots on the bottom. The fruits should be firm, stocky and shiny.

Frozen blackberries are a good alternative to fresh fruit. If you want to stock up your freezer, it is best to follow these tips: so that the individual berry fruits don’t freeze together and are well portioned, spread the blackberries out on a freezer tray or a plate and freeze the fruits after washing and dabbing them dry. In addition, you can sprinkle the berries with sugar - that way, the colour and taste will be better preserved.

*All specifications given are to be considered as guideline values, and depend in each case on the type of food and on the proper storage without interruption of the cold chain from harvest/production through to the Liebherr appliance. Should food products have information about minimum shelf life, the date on the packaging always applies.
