Kelly drilling
Kelly drilling belongs to the most common dry rotary drilling methods and is used for the production of bored piles with a large diameter (from a size of approx. 500 mm). The process is suitable for nearly all types of soil and rock. The soil is conveyed with relatively short rotary drilling tools, such as augers, core barrels, buckets and special drilling tools. A typical element of this drilling method is the drill rod, the so-called Kelly bar, which is telescopic and facilitates large drilling depths.
Procedure with uncased Kelly drilling:
1. Installing the protective pile
2. Emptying, e.g. with an auger
3. Inserting the reinforcement
4. Concreting
5. Finished pile

Cased Kelly drilling
When the soil is insufficiently solid or in case of groundwater ingress boreholes must be produced using a casing.
Uncased Kelly drilling
Solid, dry building ground allows borehole installation without a casing.
Change of drilling tools
For diverse soil conditions augers, core barrels, buckets and special drilling tools are used.
Short leader
For drilling work with restricted headroom special short leaders are available.
Casing oscillator
When the torque of the rotary drive is insufficient, hydraulic casing oscillators are applied.
Removal of drill cuttings
Alternate rotating and shaking of the auger on the surface removes the loosened soil from the auger.
Insertion of reinforcement cage
After the borehole has been produced the reinforcement cage is lifted into the borehole using the auxiliary winch of the drilling rig.
Concreting of the pile
Immediately after the reinforcement cage has been inserted the borehole is filled with concrete.
