Four Liebherr cranes in spectacular Paris construction

  • Four Liebherr 280 HC-L luffing jib cranes support “Triangle” construction in Paris
  • Two of the cranes are mounted on portal bases and climb externally along the building
  • Minimal out-of-service position, high lifting capacity and cutting-edge technology make the 280 HC-L the ideal solution for large-scale urban projects with limited space

Four Liebherr 280 HC-L luffing jib cranes are being deployed in the construction of the spectacular Triangle building in the heart of Paris. Two of the cranes are mounted on portal bases and climb externally along the pyramid-shaped structure, an ideal solution for the confined site conditions and the building’s unique geometry.

In the centre of the French capital, one of Europe’s most striking construction projects ”Trinagle” is currently taking shape. For the creation of this new Paris landmark, French crane specialist HEXAGone Services and construction group BESIX are relying on Liebherr crane technology. Four Liebherr 280 HC-L luffing jib cranes are currently operating on site, tackling special structural challenges and spectacular architecture. Two 280 HC-L 12/24 are mounted on portal bases and will reach a hook height of 187 meters and 152 meters. The other two 280 HC-L 16/28 are mounted on foundation anchors and will reach a tower height of 85.5 and 95.7 meters.

Three corners for a visionary project

With its distinctive triangular form, “Triangle” is set to become a defining feature of the Paris skyline. The building will measure 180 metres in length and just 35 metres in width. This extraordinary geometry places specific demands on the Liebherr 280 HC-L luffing jib cranes in use. Two of the four cranes are mounted on portal bases and will climb externally along the building during the construction phase. The 280 HC-L cranes are ideally suited to the site’s requirements, offering efficient climbing technology, a maximum lifting capacity of 28 tonnes, and a minimal slewing radius of just 7.5 metres. Especially in densely built-up urban environments like Paris, the reduced out-of-service position and compact slewing radius are crucial advantages.

Architecture meets functionality

Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, “Triangle” will be a new, vibrant mixed-use destination in Paris, incorporating a hotel, local shops, a cultural centre, a nursery, a health centre, offices and co-working spaces. The project will also contribute to Paris’s environmental transition through a range of innovations including energy efficiency, extensive use of renewable energy, and prioritisation of low-carbon mobility.

The Triangle project stands out not only for its architectural ambition, but also for the technical challenges involved in its construction. The collaboration between HEXAGone Services (French subsidiary of the VAN DER SPEK Group), BESIX and Liebherr demonstrates how modern crane solutions can be seamlessly integrated into complex high-rise projects. The use of Liebherr 280 HC-L luffing jib cranes once again makes a significant contribution to the successful delivery of one of Europe’s most ambitious construction projects.
