Flexible military cranes – in use all over the world
Liebherr uses all its vast experience for designing special cranes for military purposes. Our military cranes are in demand with the army, air force and navy; they have proven themselves all over the world with repair, resupply and engineering units.
Bespoke mobile cranes for military use
Liebherr has manufactured more then 800 military cranes with lifting capacities from 10 to 500 tonnes since 1977. The product range extends from standard cranes with additional options to specially developed vehicles for military purposes.
Mobile cranes from Liebherr are suitable for both on-road and off-road use. They feature great economy and are very flexible in use. To satisfy special technical requirements and special solutions, Liebherr uses time-tested components which have been used many times on standard cranes.
Special technical equipment for military cranes
The equipment versions for military cranes may include the following, depending on requirements:
- Rescue winches
- Towing hitches
- Tyres with emergency features
- Emergency hydraulic controls
- Various load handling equipment
- Special containers for transporting special accessories

Economy through flexibility
The G-BKF from Liebherr is an armoured rescue crane on a four-axle mobile crane chassis. It has excellent off-road capability and great manoeuvrability. The G-BKF is flexible and economical to run since it is equipped both for hoisting loads and for rescuing vehicles.
Its 20.9-metre telescopic boom enables the G-BKF to handle loads of up to 20 tonnes quickly and precisely. Fitted with two rescue winches and a towing hitch at the rear, it can be used to rescue and tow a wide range of different vehicles.
The all-terrain chassis on the G-BKF features the very latest chassis and powertrain technology to provide excellent handling even on difficult terrain.
Spacious storage lockers
The G-BKF is equipped with a wide range of functional accessories and provides lots of space in systematically arranged storage lockers.
Powerful telescopic boom
The G-BKF armoured rescue crane has a 20.9 metre telescopic boom which enables it to hoist loads of up to 20 tonnes quickly and precisely.
The G-BKF has tow rescue winches fitted on the rear and also features an underlift with lift cradle. An extensive range of accessories enables it to rescue and tow a very wide range of civilian and military vehicles.
Flexible rescue winches with great winching force
The vehicle can winch in objects synchronously with the winch cable over the retracted telescopic boom and the cable on the 200 kN rescue winch. This means that an object can be raised slightly and pulled at the same time by the towing equipment.
Standard crane with practical benefits
In 2002 Liebherr managed to win a major order for the French Army. The order was for a total of 50 LTM 1055/1 AF cranes. The positive features of this standard crane include the following:
- High lifting capacities
- Compact dimensions
- Sensitive manoeuvring in very constricted spaces
- Very good off-road capability
- Driving speeds up to 80 km/h
Extensive range of comfort and safety equipment and a practical transport concept for crane accessories round off the crane's features.
Smart transport solution for bridge elements
In 2014 four identical LTM 1055-3.2 mobile cranes were delivered to the Armasuisse, the procurement department of the Swiss Army. One of the jobs for the all-terrain cranes is for building pontoons. To satisfy this requirement, Liebherr designed and produced special accessories for transporting steel bridge supports.
On each trip each military crane can transport two steel supports and a connection yoke on to the bridge under construction. The elements are then placed on the bridge piles which have previously been rammed into the river bed. A wheel loader then surfaces the road. In the meantime the crane is on land picking up the load for the next assembly job.
