Transport

How can I transport my fridge?

As the saying goes, Moving three times is as bad as one good house fire. So nothing gets “burned” the next time you move house, find out how to transport your valuable fridge and/or freezer from A to B safely.

Preparation

Remove all groceries, defrost the appliance and clean it thoroughly.

Dismantling

Remove all removable parts so that nothing slides around inside or is broken.

Making the appliance secure

Secure the fridge door using adhesive tape to ensure it doesn’t open during transport.

What to look out for when transporting your fridge

Follow these four tips for transporting your fridge correctly and you’ll have an appliance that looks almost as good as new. Of course every model is different, which means that one might be transportable on its side while another needs to be switched off for 24 hours. In most cases, however, you can follow these four tips to avoid any risk and ensure smooth transport from A to B.

It is always better to transport a fridge upright or at a slight angle. The reason for this is the compressor mounting. This is designed to absorb vibrations of the compressor during operation and can, in rare cases, be damaged when exposed to lateral forces. But don’t worry – if you have to transport your fridge on its side due to limited space, in the majority of cases it will not be damaged. You just won’t be able to switch it back on immediately after transport.

If you have transported your fridge on its side, you should wait at least 12 hours before switching it back on. In the case of older fridges, we recommend waiting 24 hours. If transported upright, 2 hours is sufficient. This allows the refrigerant to flow back into the dedicated container.

If you are met with an unpleasant odour when you open the fridge door or if your appliance even smells when it's closed, then action urgently needs to be taken. The following two tips will help you remedy this quickly in any household:

  • 1. Place a bowl of coffee grounds in the fridge. In some cases this absorbs the unpleasant odour. Do not use concentrated cleaners.
  • 2. Place an uncovered bowl containing a few teaspoons of baking powder or bicarbonate of soda (both are equally effective) in the fridge.
