09/21/2018 WindEnergy 2018: Liebherr expands its portfolio with main bearings for wind turbines
- Continuously rotating moment bearings for wind turbines
- Optimised bearing design due to Liebherr’s own test bench

At WindEnergy 2018, one of the most important wind energy platforms, Liebherr presents its new main bearing to the public. This key component is a new development that complements the existing Liebherr portfolio of slewing bearings for electromechanical and hydraulic rotor blade and yaw adjustment of wind turbines. These slewing bearings make the rotor able to turn steadily around its axis, thus withstanding constant high loading. Liebherr main bearings are used in wind turbines with a capacity of 2 MW and upwards.
Power generation by wind turbines is playing an increasingly important role in energy policy. Therefore, increasing efficiency is an important prerequisite for further growth in the industry. The wind turbine rotor, which is supported by a main bearing, is a key factor. Liebherr offers moment bearings in two main designs: depending on the requirements, the prevailing loads and customer specification, double-row tapered roller bearings or triple-row roller bearing slewing rings are used. The optimised sealing concept for slewing bearings ensures that the inside of the bearings is protected against dirt and moisture and, above all, prevents the lubricant from escaping.
Valuable findings from endurance and life-cycle tests, which Liebherr carries out on its own test bench at the site in Biberach, have enabled Liebherr to optimise the bearing design in terms of cost and performance. The test bench has been in operation since last year and has provided essential validation of the design approach concerning raceway lifespan, sealings and rolling elements.
From 25th to 28th September, a triple-row roller bearing with a diameter of 2.60 meters and a weight of 8 tons will be on display at the Liebherr exhibition stand. The Liebherr team is presenting its new main bearing concept and is looking forward to interesting discussions with the trade fair visitors.
