The Engineering Technician works with Engineers, Technicians, and field personnel in support of engineering tests and R&D projects on mining products. Note: This position is located in Freeman, Virginia.

Responsibilities

  • Works with Engineers and other Technicians performing tests on mining products, equipment, or systems.
  • Reads and interprets sketches, engineering drawings, electrical or hydraulic schematics, or verbal instructions to complete required tasks.
  • Fabricates, assembles, troubleshoots, or reconfigures test fixtures.
  • Works as a team member with Engineers, other Technicians, and field personnel on tests or R&D projects.
  • Modifies, builds, or installs prototype truck components in the test lab or in the field.
  • Installs data acquisition equipment required for engineering tests in the test lab or in the field.
  • Builds, or repairs electrical control wires used for new or existing test equipment.
  • Keeps work areas clean and orderly.
  • Works with supervisor or co-workers to perform mechanical or electrical tasks.
  • Receives and issues parts using the established warehouse procedures.
  • Utilizes the LN and LIKV to check parts availability or search for Bill of Materials (BOMs) and engineering drawings.
  • Performs pre-shift inspections on support equipment and haul trucks.
  • Has knowledge of and uses the lock out tag out procedures required for task where potential energy is a hazard.
  • Preforms duties of basic haul truck operation in support of testing and site maintenance.
  • Participates in Engineering Development Program.

Competencies

Engineering Technician 8

  • High school diploma or equivalent and 1 year automotive or heavy equipment experience; or technical school or apprenticeship certificate and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to use basic functions in MS Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) or similar software packages.
  • Ability to work according to established engineering, company, or customer safety procedures.
  • Ability to operate and maintain power and hand tools.
  • Ability to handle and dispose of hazardous wastes such as oil, antifreeze, parts cleaner solvent, or similar material.
  • Ability to work as a team member with Engineers, other Technicians, and field personnel on tests or Product Validation projects.
  • Ability to work with supervisor or co-workers to perform mechanical or electrical tasks.

Engineering Technician 7

  • Must have a minimum of 1 year in Level 8 with at least meeting expectations, including all functions of Level 8 plus at least 6 mandatory requirements of Level 7
  • Preforms task of a level 8 technician.
  • Ability to perform basic mechanical and electrical assembly
  • Has knowledge of and uses the lock out tag out procedures required for task where potential energy is a hazard.
  • Ability to convert from US to metric engineering units.
  • Ability to perform basic automotive or heavy equipment maintenance or repair.
  • Uses established procedures for parts processing.
  • Maintains test equipment and uses the calibration procedures in place to ensure equipment is calibrated and in good condition.
  • Skilled in the operation of at least one of the following (Bull dozer, motor grader, excavator)
  • Skilled in the operation in the operation of forklifts, overhead cranes, man lift, and tele handler.
  • Ensures rigging is inspected and selected for the correct task. Ensures the correct procedures are used for lifting task.
  • Maintains annual MSHA Training and GMM Training.

Engineering Technician 6

  • Must have a minimum of 1 year in Level 7 with at least meeting expectations, including all functions of Level 7 plus at least 4 mandatory requirements of Level 6
  • Performs task of a Level 7 technician.
  • Knowledge of basic hydraulic and electrical systems.
  • Skilled in performing mechanical and electrical assembly tasks.
  • Ability to receive and issue warehouse parts to projects.
  • Ability to track, send and receive test equipment to various vendors for calibration.
  • Knowledge of basic computer operation such as serial or network connections.
  • Reads and interprets sketches, engineering drawings, electrical or hydraulic schematics, or verbal instructions to complete required tasks.
  • Modifies, builds, or installs prototype truck components in the test lab or in the field.
  • Performs pre-shift inspections on support equipment and haul trucks.
  • Builds or repairs electrical control wires used for new or existing test equipment.
  • Skilled in basic haul truck operation in support of testing and site maintenance.
  • Skilled in the operation of all of the following (Bulldozer, motor grader, excavator).

Engineering Technician 5

  • Must have a minimum of 2 years in Level 6 with at least meeting expectations, including all functions of Level 6 plus at least 3 mandatory requirements of Level 5
  • Performs task of a level 6 technician.
  • Installs data acquisition equipment required for engineering tests in the test lab or in the field.
  • Knowledge of basic welding and fabrication principles.
  • Ability to use instruments for making measurements including tape measure, crane scale, digital micrometer, pressure gauges, temperature probes, tachometer.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute area, volume and weights.
  • Ability to use data acquisition equipment and perform sensor setup.
  • Assembles, troubleshoots, or reconfigures test fixtures.
  • Independently performs preventative maintenance on haul trucks and support equipment.
  • Knowledge of the autonomous setup and equipment that’s physically on the truck (lidars, radars, smart micro sensors, and SV cameras.)
  • Verifies operation of sensors or data acquisition equipment required for engineering tests in the test lab or in the field.
  • Ability to use TMS and utilize TeamViewer (autonomy).
  • Skilled in safety operator for autonomous trucks.
  • Skilled in advanced haul truck operation in support of testing and site maintenance.

Engineering Technician 4

  • Must have a minimum of 2 years in Level 5 with at least meeting expectations, including all functions of Level 5 plus at least 4 mandatory requirements of Level 4
  • Performs task of a Level 5 technician.
  • Skilled in automotive or heavy equipment maintenance or repair.
  • Troubleshoots data acquisition equipment, cables, and sensors.
  • Ability to plan and order PM supplies.
  • Ability to calibrate sensors per engineers’ request.
  • Ability to start RPK and operate FMS/TMS systems. (autonomy)
  • Ability to use CAN tools to reset faults on STW. (autonomy)
  • Works effectively with minimal help or guidance from supervisor or co-workers to perform mechanical or electrical tasks.
  • Follow procedures to schedule trucks for maintenance or testing.
  • Troubleshoots basic electrical circuits and hydraulic systems.
  • Complete the steps to become a Certified Surface Foreman.

Engineering Technician 3

  • Must have a minimum of 2 years in Level 4 with at least meeting expectations, including all functions of Level 4 plus at least 3 mandatory requirements of Level 3
  • Performs task of a Level 4 technician.
  • Performs risk assessment to identify hazards before performing task.
  • Skilled in reading schematics, installation, and troubleshooting basic electrical circuits.
  • Ability to plan and schedule PM events.
  • Works with engineers, technicians, or independently to perform tests on mining products, equipment, or systems in the field or in the test lab.
  • Skilled in reading schematics, installation, and troubleshooting basic hydraulic circuits.
  • Ability to trouble shoot autonomous systems ( STW , TMS, FMS , RPK, CIC).
  • Performs basic haul truck Drive System inspection and troubleshooting

Engineering Technician 2

  • Must have a minimum of 2 years in Level 3 with at least meeting expectations, including all functions of Level 3 plus at least 2 mandatory requirements of Level 2
  • Performs task of a Level 3 technician.
  • Capable of checking own work and work of others.
  • Provides input to engineers or supervisor on the type of equipment required to perform a specific task.
  • Performs advanced haul truck Drive System inspection, troubleshooting, repair and commissioning.
  • Ability to organize test equipment, tools, machines, and personnel resources to align with needs of engineering stakeholders.
  • Trains or mentors technicians on procedures, proper use of data acquisition hardware and sensors, and general truck operation and safety.
  • Utilizes truck software such as the Truck Diagnostic tool and Webvisu to perform engineering tests when required.

Engineering Technician 1

  • Must have a minimum of 2 years in Level 2 with at least meeting expectations, including all functions of Level 2 plus at least 2 mandatory requirements of Level 1
  • Performs task of a Level 2 technician.
  • Skilled in the use of data acquisition equipment and sensors to implement a test plan.
  • Acts as the skilled Technician for the test lab/proving grounds in at least one specialized area.
  • of test and measurement data acquisition such as hydraulics, noise/vibration, or electrical controls.
  • Follows and implements the test plan by working with customer, supplier, or other department personnel.
  • Specifies, installs, and verifies operation of sensors or data acquisition equipment required for engineering tests based on the requirements in the test plan.
  • Ability to break down complex problems and isolate variables to create a systematic plan for accomplishing project goals.
  • Ability to organize, document and articulate technical information needed for collaborative problem solving and issue resolution.

Additional Requirements:

  • Is expected to travel nationally and internationally up to 30% to customer or supplier sites.
  • Ability to complete and maintain mine certifications or safety training such as Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) hazard training.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license and passport.
