The purpose-built training centre at Biggleswade is staffed by fully qualified instructors and assessors who constantly strive to exceed industry and statutory UK/European legislation requirements through reviewing of health, safety, environmental and training policy procedures.

Course Programmes

Liebherr offers a wide range of statutory courses demanded by today's industry, ensuring compliance with lifting operations and lifting equipment requirements (LOLER 98) and British Standards for the safe use of cranes (BS7121 range).

The fees and programmes range from a basic operations course for mobile cranes up to planning and managing lifting operations.

Appointed Person

A course designed for Site Managers, Project Managers, Supervisors and Engineers whose duties include responsibility for the planning of lifting operations and who will have overall control to act on behalf of the management of the organisation requiring the load to be moved.

Course objectives

To provide clear information of all current legislation BS7121 and LOLER, codes of practice and guidance notes associated with the safe use of cranes and lifting gear during lifting operations, ensuring the implementation of a safe system of work. To gain theoretical and practical knowledge and to be qualified to carry out the responsibilities of the Appointed Person.

Slinger & Signaller

A course designed for personnel who have received no formal instruction or training in the use of lifting accessories and the use of communication methods.

Course objectives

To provide clear information of all current legislation BS7121 and LOLER, codes of practice and guidance notes associated with the safe use of cranes and lifting gear during lifting operations. To enable them to use the correct methods of communication on site and to ensure the lifting accessories are legal and appropriate methods of attachment are use to lift the loads safely.

Crane Supervisor

A course designed for personnel engaged in the duties of controlling lifting operations as may be delegated by the appointed person.

Course objectives

To provide clear information of all current legislation BS7121 and LOLER, codes of practice and guidance notes associated with the safe use of cranes and lifting gear during lifting operations, ensuring the implementation of a safe system of work as laid out in the method statement.

Mobile Crane Operator

A course designed for personnel who have received no formal instruction or training in the safe rigging, de-rigging and use of mobile cranes.

Course objectives

To provide clear information of all current legislation BS7121 and LOLER, codes of practice and guidance notes associated with the safe use of cranes and lifting gear during lifting operations. To enable the candidate to safely set up and work with mobile cranes on site. Follow various methods of communication.

Crawler Crane Operator

A course designed for personal who have received no formal instruction or training in the safe use of crawler cranes.

Course objectives

To deliver training and testing towards the achievement of the intermediate Construction Award for Crawler Cranes.

LTR Training

Course duration 3 days 08:30 – 16:30

The course is aimed at experienced crawler crane operators that need an induction on the LTR range of cranes. The induction is carried out on an LTR 1100.

The course will include

  • Daily checks and maintenance
  • The LICCON system and controls
  • Ballasting the machine
  • Setting the crawler tracks

Thorough examination of mobile cranes

A course designed for enable an engineer to examine Liebherr mobile cranes in complete compliance with LOLER98. This course is also a training element which forms part of the requirements to ensure an engineer is deemed competent to Thoroughly Examine mobile cranes.

Course objectives

The course will be based on the CPA Best Practice Guide (BPG) for the Maintenance, Inspection and Thorough Examination of Mobile Cranes.

Influence of wind and LICCON planner

A one day’s course designed for personnel whose duties include responsibility for the planning of lifting operations and who will have overall control to act on behalf of the management of the organisation requiring the load to be moved.

NVQs

The objective of this is to deliver a nationally recognised industry specific qualification for the lifting industry for appointed persons, crane supervisors, mobile crane operators and slinger/signallers.

The National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) is a competence based qualification which is achieved through normal work based activity. The candidate builds a portfolio to show they have the necessary skills, knowledge, ability, training and experience required to perform the role safely.

Our NVQ Assessors specialise in lifting operations. The team have worked as crane operators, slinger/signallers and crane supervisors. They also carry out the role of Appointed Person for the Liebherr-Great Britain Mining Division; therefore they have the knowledge and experience to guide candidates through the NVQ and achieve it in good time.

Meet our team

Holly Campbell

Holly joined the Liebherr team in 2023 as training coordinator, bringing with her a combination of experience, enthusiasm for learning development and a positive attitude.

She began her career in 2012 as a learning support assistant where her responsibilities included maintaining individual education plans and updating students' personal development records.

Holly then progressed into the law enforcement sector before moving into the aerospace industry as an estimator and customer service administrator, using her organisational skills to support the dynamic and complex field of aerospace technology.

Ryan Williams

Ryan, who recently joined the team as an operator instructor, has been in the crane industry for 10 years, initially as a slinger/signaller before progressing to a lift supervisor and then operator.

In his new role he is working on crane familiarisation on various cranes for customers' operators. He has gained his lifting examiner qualifications and is now working towards CPCS testers and trainer qualifications.

Ryan’s career has seen him working across a variety of industries, from construction to electricity and gas and from rail to film, TV and music production.

Andy Claypole

Andy trained in the British Army (Royal Engineers) as a crane operator, working around the globe in a variety of unusual lifting environments.

After 12 years he left the Army to join the commercial crane hire industry in the North of England, where he gained extensive experience over a range of crane manufacturers and models.

In 2006 Andy joined Liebherr as their training manager in Biggleswade. He is a qualified CPCS trainer and tester and internal verifier.

Andy manages a team of dedicated instructors and enjoys developing the courses to keep up with customer demand, changes in legislation and new crane technology.

Craig Scammell

Craig initially worked and trained with Ainscough crane hire. Here he gained extensive knowledge of the crane hire business and a wide experience of different crane manufacturers and technologies.

He joined Liebherr in 2009 as a crane Operator Trainer, he has gone on to become a fully qualified CPCS tester and trainer and also works as an NVQ assessor.

As a training school instructor Craig upholds the highest levels of quality and professionalism and enjoys sharing his skills and passion on his courses.

Gordon Barber

Gordon served 13 years in the British Army (Royal Engineers) where he qualified as a Mobile Crane Driver and Slinger/Signaller. He worked in many unusual and challenging environments gaining extensive experience of crane operations.

He joined Liebherr in 2008 as an Operator Trainer and has trained operators on the various models of Liebherr cranes. He has supplemented his industry experience with continual training in house and at factory sites.

He is a fully qualified CPCS Trainer/Tester and NVQ Assessor in the categories of Appointed Person, Crane/Lifting Operations Supervisor, Mobile Crane Operator and Slinger/Signaller.

As part of the training team Gordon has been an instrumental part is training candidates to the highest standards expected by the industry.

Andrew Nichols

Andrew Nichols has been operating mobile cranes for 18 years, driving a diverse range of machines for large hire fleets. He has also been involved in rigging, including working on large cranes both as a rigging driver and as a rigger during crane build-ups.

During his career in the industry he has worked with specialist cranes such as the Franna and lift and carry duty cranes. For the past eight years Andrew has worked freelance as an appointed person and lift supervisor for drilling companies and hire companies and has built up extensive industry knowledge across a very varied customer base.

Andrew has also worked in the TV and film industry.

Martyn Lapworth

At the age of 16 Martyn joined the British army (Royal Engineers) where he took on a number of roles and ultimately specialised as a crane operator gaining broad experience.

After seven years Martyn left the army and drove Class 1 HGVs for ten years before joining a local crane hire company. He spent ten years there getting lots of lifting industry experience on a variety of different machines and qualifying as a lift supervisor.

Martyn joined Liebherr in 2015 as an operator trainer. He has since qualified to become an Appointed Person, CPCS tester and lifting accessories examiner and is keen to pass on his knowledge and experience to the next generation of crane operators.
