The fifth in the fleet: Sommer takes delivery of Liebherr LTM 1750-9.1 mobile crane

  • Sommer places particular emphasis on the heavy-duty crane class
  • Five LTM 1750-9.1s in operation across Germany, primarily for wind power
  • The LTM 1750-9.1 is characterised by high performance and short set-up times

Sommer Kranverleih GmbH has taken delivery of a further LTM 1750-9.1 from Liebherr. With five cranes of this type in its fleet, the Bremen-based family business is setting new standards in the heavy-duty crane class. The Liebherr 800-tonne cranes are primarily used in the wind power sector.

– In September 2020, Sommer acquired its first LTM 1750-9.1, thereby significantly strengthening its crane fleet. “It was a bold move at the time, but our success proved us right. We now operate five LTM 1750-9.1s and one LTM 1650-8.1, placing a particular focus on the heavy-duty crane class. This year, another LTM 1650-8.1 will be added to our fleet,” explains Hagen Sommer, who, together with his cousin Björn, is the third generation to run the family business.

The 9-axle LTM 1750-9.1 stands out because the entire telescopic boom can be transported on public roads. Its design is geared towards particularly short set-up times. Thanks to its high performance, it is ideally suited for work in the wind power sector. When erecting the latest-generation towers, the 800-tonne crane installs the lower concrete segments. The upper segments, nacelle and rotor are then handled by a large lattice boom crane. However, the LTM 1750-9.1 is also frequently used for repair work, the replacement of heavy components on wind turbines and during decommissioning, known as wind energy repowering.

Sommer also deploys its large cranes in industry, the chemical sector and bridge construction. On its maiden voyage, the new LTM 1750-9.1 will perform a tandem lift with another LTM 1750-9.1 from Sommer.

A family business with decades of tradition

Hagen and Björn are the third generation to run the family business Sommer, founded in 1959, as managing partners. The company’s core business is crane hire, with 30 mobile cranes ranging from 40 to 800 tonnes lifting capacity in Bremen and the surrounding area. The heavy-duty cranes are deployed nationwide. Sommer Kranverleih GmbH regularly modernises its fleet.

“Liebherr is a strong partner for us. The cranes retain their value well, and Liebherr also offers us special-purpose cranes that are optimally designed for specific applications. We currently have the compact LTC 1050-3.1, the LTR 1100 telescopic crawler crane, and the MK 88 Plus and MK 120-5.1 mobile construction cranes in operation,” reports Björn Sommer.
