Store sushi and enjoy it fresh

With its fresh ingredients, sushi is a popular dish that is best eaten fresh. However, if you store the sushi rolls correctly, you can still enjoy them the next day. Read on to find out what you need to bear in mind!

The key points

  • You can store leftover sushi in the fridge for a few days.
  • If you freeze fresh sushi, it will keep for several weeks.
  • Frozen sushi can be defrosted gently in the fridge or microwave.

Storing sushi rice:

  • Sushi rice will keep for several days in the fridge thanks to the vinegar mixture.
  • Do not store the rice in the fridge for too long otherwise it will become sticky.
  • Portion out cooked rice in cling film and freeze the leftovers easily.

Storing sushi fish:

  • Fish is highly perishable and should be permanently cooled.
  • For longer storage, you should freeze the fish.

Storing sushi rolls in the fridge

If you have leftovers that you couldn’t eat fresh, you should put them in the fridge as soon as possible. The fresh sushi can be kept there for several days. You should especially ensure that perishable ingredients such as fish are chilled as quickly as possible.

If you want to keep a small supply of sushi pieces or rolls, pack the sushi in airtight containers and place them in the chest freezer. But make sure you only freeze fresh sushi.

Before eating, you can defrost the frozen pieces in the fridge or microwave. Use the defrost function to prevent the raw fish or other fresh ingredients from cooking in the microwave.

Storing sushi rice

Raw rice can be stored in airtight packaging for quite some time. You can follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the packaging. Once prepared, sushi rice can still be kept in the fridge for several days, as the shelf life is extended by adding the typical vinegar mixture.

After a while, however, the prepared rice can become sticky despite the airtight packaging, so you should not store the rice in the fridge for too long.

Alternatively, you can also portion the sushi rice and wrap it in cling film once it has cooled. The small packets of rice can then be frozen for several weeks. To defrost, simply place the packets in the microwave without foil with a tablespoon of water.

Storing sushi fish correctly

If you want to prepare fresh sushi, fish is one of the classic ingredients. At the same time, fish is a highly perishable food. That’s why we’ll show you how to ensure that the fish keeps its shelf life and flavour until you roll the sushi.

You can store the fish in the fridge for a short time. The climate in the BioFresh Fish & Seafood safes is ideal for storing fish, which is why fish stays fresh here for up to 4 days.

Before preparing the fish, check that the fish does not have any unpleasant odours or areas. Intense odours or altered surfaces can be a sign of spoilage, in which case you should dispose of the fish.

You can also store fresh, raw fish frozen. To defrost fish before preparation, you should plan to leave it in the refrigerator for a few hours.
