Evolution of powertrains in off-highway applications

The combustion engine is particularly suited to heavy-duty applications in demanding operating environments. High or low humidity, high altitudes, dust, shock loads, or vibrations: it has demonstrated reliable performance under challenging conditions for decades.

However, the goal is to have a multitude of solutions in the future so that each industry can find the solution that suits it. We believe that the picture of the future will be made up of combustion engines, electric batteries and a range of alternative fuels.

When it comes to exhaust emissions, the fuel used plays an important role alongside the combustion engine technology. Depending on the fuel source and application, synthetic fuels, biofuels or hydrogen may be relevant options for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

As a trend radar, our Components team analyses emerging technologies and market developments to identify potential solutions for future challenges. This includes evaluating ammonia, methanol and ethanol as possible future energy carriers for industries that rely on powerful machinery and engines.

Internal combustion engine (ICE): a proven solution for extreme operationg conditions

We consider the ICE one of the most capable powertrains for delivering high mechanical power under extreme operating conditions in the off-highway industry. In particular, the heavy load conditions to which many heavy-duty vehicles and machines are exposed require reliable and efficient powertrain solutions. ICEs have met these requirements for decades and continue to play an important role in powering demanding off-highway applications.
