The key points

  • Rich in vitamins: pomegranates contain many important vitamins, especially vitamin C and vitamin K.
  • Low calories: with only 52 calories per 100 g, pomegranates are very low in calories.
  • Important nutrients: pomegranates contain folic acid, potassium and magnesium.
  • Antioxidant effect: the polyphenols in pomegranates have a powerful antioxidant effect.

What vitamins does pomegranate contain?

Pomegranates are particularly rich in vitamin C, which is essential for the immune system and skin health. With 10.2 mg of vitamin C per 100 g, pomegranate supports the immune system and helps the body fight off illness more effectively. Vitamin C also has an antioxidant effect and protects cells from free radicals.

Pomegranates also contain vitamin K, which is important for blood clotting and bone health, and vitamin A, which is important for vision and skin health. This combination makes pomegranates a healthy fruit that promotes overall health.

In addition to vitamins, pomegranates also provide other nutrients that are of great importance for the body. Particularly noteworthy is folic acid, which plays an important role in cell division and promotes blood formation. Potassium in pomegranates helps regulate blood pressure and supports the cardiovascular system. Pomegranates also contain magnesium, which is important for healthy muscle function, and iron, which supports oxygen transport in the body.

The fibre contained in pomegranates contributes to digestive health and helps stabilise blood sugar levels.

What are the health benefits of pomegranate?

Pomegranates have many health-promoting properties that make them a valuable fruit in the diet. The polyphenols in pomegranates, especially punicalagin, have powerful antioxidant properties. They help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, which can reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Pomegranates have also been linked to cardioprotective properties: they are said to help lower blood pressure and improve blood lipid levels, which can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Pomegranates are extremely versatile and can be used in a variety of dishes. The small, crunchy seeds are ideal for adding a special touch to salads, yoghurts or fruit salads. The seeds add extra vitamins and a fruity kick to smoothies. Pomegranates are also used as an ingredient in juices or pomegranate syrup. The syrup is perfect for adding a special touch to cocktails and desserts or as a topping for pancakes and waffles.

When stored correctly, pomegranates stay fresh for a while. Uncut pomegranates can be stored in the fridge for up to 44 days. When you remove the seeds, store them in a sealed container in your fridge – they will stay fresh for about three to four days.
