The key points

  • Plums are round with a pronounced longitudinal seam, while damsons have an elongated oval shape with a less noticeable seam.
  • Damsons are easier to pit and are firm and less watery – ideal for baking. Plums are juicy and soft – perfect for jam.
  • Plums taste sweet, damsons rather sweet and sour.
  • Store plums and damsons in the fridge.

Damsons vs plums– the differences

The first question that arises is exactly how plums and damsons differ. While plums tend to be predominantly round, damsons are characterised by an oblong-oval shape. However, a far more noticeable characteristic that distinguishes the two fruits is that the plum has a pronounced longitudinal seam. Damsons, on the other hand, have a less pronounced seam.

Another typical distinguishing feature: in contrast to plums, the pit can be easily removed from the yellow and very juicy flesh of the damson. Damsons also contain less water than plums. This makes damsons the clear front-runner as a topping for cakes. Because they require a lot less time and effort. They also retain their elongated shape during baking due to the lower proportion of water and do not fall apart. Plums, on the other hand, are ideal for making plum jam or a crispy plum crumble thanks to their soft flesh.

And what about the flavour of plums and damsons?

While plums taste very juicy and sweet, damsons are characterised by a sweet and sour taste. There are also differences in the flesh of the fruit: Plums have a soft and loose consistency. The flesh of damsons, on the other hand, is firm and dry. This also makes it easier to remove the pit.

As you can see, there are a number of characteristics that can be used to distinguish between damsons and plums. But unfortunately it is not always that clear-cut, as it is not possible to differentiate between many varieties because they are cross-breeds between varieties of both groups.

Optimal storage of damsons and plums

To enjoy the delicious stone fruits for as long as possible, store your plums or damsons in the fridge. Damsons stay fresh in the fridge for up to 6 days and plums for up to 8 days. Vegetable drawers with modern technologies, such as BioFresh, ensure that delicate fruit such as plums and damsons stay fresh, flavoursome and nutritious for much longer. The key lies in the precise control of temperature and humidity: BioFresh safes maintain temperatures just above 0 °C, combined with optimum humidity. For water-rich fruit such as plums and damsons, this means less dehydration, a slower ripening process and the preservation of valuable vitamins. While damsons retain their firm consistency and sweetness, plums remain juicy and flavourful – ideal if you don’t want to consume them immediately.
