Teamwork in Taiwan: LBX 600 paves the way for slurry wall cutter LSC 8-18

In urban New Taipeh the carrier machine LBX 600 with hydraulic grab HSG 5-18 and the duty cycle crawler crane HS 8130.1 with the cutter LSC 8-18 from Liebherr enable efficient excavation and precise slurry walls. For the company Tung Feng, the state-of-the-art Liebherr technology represents economical construction progress – even in the tightest of spaces.

With a population of more than four million, New Taipeh is the largest city in Taiwan. The urban area can also be felt on the jobsite where Tung Feng is building slurry walls. That is why the company is relying on Liebherr machines in this confined space. They are compact in size but at the same time deliver performance and precision.

First of all, Tung Feng is excavating the loose soil with the carrier machine for slurry wall construction LBX 600, which was specially designed for urban jobsites. The machine is equipped with a hydraulic slurry wall grab type HSG 5-18 from Liebherr. When the grab reaches the deeper layers of rock and sandstone, which have higher compressive strength, Tung Feng changes from the compact LBX 600 to the duty cycle crawler crane HS 8130.1 with slurry wall cutter type LSC 8-18. This allows the hard soil layers to be penetrated efficiently without the need for laborious predrilling. This reduces the time required, significantly increases productivity and enables clean material removal on the confined jobsite. Using the Liebherr cutter, Tung Feng advances 4 metres per hour on average. The finished slurry walls reach down to depths of 30 to 55 metres and are between 800 and 1,500 millimetres thick. Additionally, individual barrette piles are being inserted for foundations within the construction field.

For urban demands: modular design

The LBX 600 and the HS 8130.1 are a good combination both for the application as well as for the operator since they are controlled using the same cabin concept with the same joysticks and monitors. This means it is easy to change between the machines and to work productively, which makes it easier for companies to find suitable personnel. The LBX 600, the slurry wall grab and the slurry wall cutter all have a modular design, which makes them particularly flexible in densely built areas.

Three different booms can be fitted to the carrier machine LBX 600 in order to adapt it to the demands of the jobsite. The standard version of the machine has a total height of 17.8 metres. For operation with limited headroom, for example under bridges, work can be carried out as Low Head with 11 metres or as Ultra Low Head with 5.8 metres. The hydraulic slurry wall grab comprises an extremely robust main body, which can be extended by a module when required. Thanks to the higher weight and low centre of gravity an even better level of verticality can be achieved, which is advantageous for bigger-sized slurry walls. Liebherr has used the same concept for the slurry wall cutter. Tung Feng is applying the standard version of the LBX 600, the short version of the grab and the long version of the cutter. After about 10 months, the slurry wall work was completed in January 2026.

With the Liebherr machines, Tung Feng found an efficient solution for completing the slurry wall work in New Taipeh. ‘The performance of the cutter met and even exceeded our expectations. Our drivers report of easy control and simple handling. The machines are reliable, efficient and very precise – and all that in the narrowest of spaces. Also, Liebherr’s fast service response strengthens reliability and makes operation easier,’ says Ke-Chiang Wu, Project Manager at Tung Feng.
