Department of Planning Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) Rail Maintenance Division in Adelaide called a tender for a Road Rail excavator that was to meet a list of requirements. It needed to be a machine that would be versatile, viable and efficient. It also needed to be a multi purpose machine that could be used across various business units to conduct a variety of tasks.
Through a vigorous tender evaluation process of many competitive submissions, the Liebherr A 922 Rail Excavator stood out to be the best value for money and best fit for purpose machine for DPTI. The fact that it was a complete factory built machine, built specifically for rail use, was not only a convenient factor for servicing and repairs but gave a sense of assurance that it was going to be built right.
There is no doubt that the Liebherr A 922 Rail Excavator is a complex machine in their fleet. Saying that, the A 922 is a modern, state of the art machine with a myriad of safety features and technical self-contained tools that aid the work group on a daily basis. They have adopted “machine champions” within their group to mentor new users of the A 922.
Recently the A 922 proved its worth during the construction phase of a section of the metropolitan network. Among other tasks, the A 922 coupled with a Harrybilt sleeper grab was able to lay new sleepers and track in above industry standard time. This increased productivity and cost saving impressed many.
The Liebherr team go out of their way to assist with operator teething issues, technical questions, service and repair under a sometimes heavy workload. The service team under Brett Crawford have been commended on many occasions for commitment to customer service.

Liebherr is increasing the overall service life of its Fibre ropes from 14 to 16 years, with the decisive period of use rising to up to 12 years. This is based on multi-year ageing trials on test rigs and analyses of ropes already in field. The new ruling applies automatically to all new ropes and those already in the field. This step forms part of Liebherr's ongoing path towards establishing Fibre technology as the new standard in the tower crane market.
