During the construction of the new Parque Ventas in Madrid, the Spanish crane company Grúas Aguilar handled challenging heavy-lift installations. A total of seven Liebherr cranes were used: LTM mobile cranes with lifting capacities ranging from 95 to 800 metric tons, as well as an MK 140-5.1 mobile construction crane. The infrastructure project is creating a new pedestrian and green zone over the M-30 urban motorway and will in future connect the Salamanca and Ciudad Lineal districts.
Working within tight timeframes, the cranes and personnel had to carry out precise heavy-lift installations. The Liebherr LTM 1650-8.1 and LTM 1750-9.1 mobile cranes were responsible for hoisting the main structure: concrete girders weighing up to 184 tonnes were installed using telescopic booms extended to 40 metres with a working radius of up to 20 metres.
Further installation work was carried out by an LTM 1500-8.1 and an additional LTM 1650-8.1. These cranes installed girders weighing around 120 tonnes. An LTM 1095-5.1 erected 25-tonne pillars and positioned them precisely. In addition, another LTM 1750-9.1 was used to install 130-tonne girders. The Liebherr MK 140-5.1 mobile construction crane handled the installation and laying of the floor slabs.
A particular challenge was carrying out all lifting operations during the night. Operations began at 10 pm each night and had to be completed by 6 am so that traffic on the M-30 could be reopened in good time.
“We were involved in the technical planning and the development of the lifting concepts right from the early stages of the project. Thanks to the reliability of the Liebherr cranes and the support from the Liebherr Ibérica service team, we were able to carry out the work with a high level of safety and maximum precision,” says Luis Aguilar, owner of the Arganda del Rey-based company. The Spanish municipality is located around 20 kilometres south-east of Madrid. Grúas Aguilar was founded in 1968 and is now one of the leading crane companies on the Iberian Peninsula. The company has more than 200 mobile cranes, over 90 per cent of which are Liebherr machines.
Parque Ventas will see the creation, by spring 2027, of a green and pedestrian area spanning more than 16,000 square metres and stretching almost 200 metres across the M-30. The project aims to significantly improve the quality of life in the surrounding area and better connect the two neighbouring districts of Salamanca and Ciudad Lineal.
