Setting the benchmark for fuel efficiency in the 100-tonne class
The new R 9100 G8 seriously surpassed expectations during its pre-series field validation. As part of the validation process, PT Madhani Talatah Nusantara (Madhani) – a mining contractor based in Jakarta, Indonesia – agreed to add a pre-series unit of the new 100-tonne machine to its fleet at Tanjung Enim mine in the South Sumatra region of Indonesia. Between September 2024 and December 2025, the R 9100 G8 not only exceeded Madhani’s performance requirements, but it also set new performance standards, delivering exceptional productivity, reliability and energy efficiency.

A key source of electricity in southern Sumatra
Madhani manages overburden removal and coal extraction at Tanjung Enim mine. The coal from the mine powers the MT Sumsel-8 power plant (2×660 MW), which requires up to 5.4 million tonnes annually to supply electricity to the Sumatran grid.
Madhani’s partnership with Liebherr Mining began in 1996 with an R 994 excavator. Today, Madhani operates 29 Liebherr excavators across Indonesia, including R 9100, R 9150, R 9200 and R 9250 models. Tanjung Enim alone has seven Liebherr excavators in its fleet: one R 9100 G8, four R 9100 G6s and two R 9150 G6s.
Pre-series field validation involves 12 months of onsite testing, overseen by a representative from our Colmar excavator factory. Because Indonesian soil conditions can’t support large mining equipment, the country is a key market for 100‑tonne excavators. There is nothing better than going to Indonesia.
Fuel savings that power more!
We had three KPIs for Liebherr during the field validation. First productivity, then fuel consumption and then durability. With Liebherr, all three of those are very good.

Same DNA – significantly improved
The new R 9100 G8 retains the strengths of the G6 version – easy maintenance and strong digging power – while boosting overall efficiency. The optional Skyview system delivers a 360° view around the machine with its four cameras to eliminate blind spots. The greasing system has been redesigned for greater reliability and 250‑hour service intervals, reducing downtime. Compatible with Liebherr’s IoMine solutions, the R 9100 G8 offers intelligent assistance and real‑time data sharing for optimal operations. Thanks to Liebherr Power Efficiency (LPE), this new machine consumes up to 20% less fuel while maintaining productivity.
