The key points

  • High in protein: herring provides high-quality protein with all essential amino acids.
  • Rich in omega-3 fatty acids: these make it particularly nutrient-dense and valuable for nutrition.
  • Lots of vitamins and minerals: vitamins D, B12 and A, as well as iodine, selenium and iron, are present in significant amounts.

What nutrients and vitamins are found in herring?

Herring contains high-quality protein with all essential amino acids and is characterised by a high fat content, particularly omega-3 fatty acids. Herring also provides vitamins such as D, B12 and A, as well as minerals such as selenium, iodine and iron. With 200 calories per 100 g, herring is one of the lower-calorie fatty fish. Its relatively high fat and protein content ensures an excellent feeling of fullness.

Herring can be prepared in many different ways – as a snack, in a salad or served in the traditional way with fried potatoes.

What exactly is herring? The term herring is simply used in common parlance quite frequently, although biological taxonomy actually demands a somewhat nuanced approach. This popular edible fish is actually the Atlantic herring. It belongs to the higher-level family of herrings. In addition to Atlantic herring, the family also includes sardines, anchovies and sprats.

How healthy is herring?

Herring is considered extremely healthy and can make a valuable contribution to a balanced diet. Particularly noteworthy is its high content of omega-3 fatty acids, which are considered essential for the human body. These polyunsaturated fatty acids can help regulate inflammatory processes and can also have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system. The vitamin D it contains can also play a key role in bone health and the immune system, especially in months with little sunlight. Vitamin B12 can support important processes in the nervous system and blood formation. Selenium and iodine, which are also found in significant quantities in herring, are important for thyroid function and cell protection.

Due to its high nutrient content and moderate calorie value, herring is an attractive choice for health-conscious people. Whether freshly prepared, marinated or smoked, herring can help supply the body with important nutrients when regularly included in the diet.

What is the best way to store herring?

Storing fish is never easy: there is no doubt that you want to play it safe, as incorrect storage runs the risk of many food-borne diseases. Whether it’s fresh herring, opened packets of soused herring or other herring products, the best choice is to store them in the BioFresh Fish & Seafood safe in your Liebherr fridge, which, at -2 °C, inhibits the growth of germs better than a traditional fridge compartment. Here, your herring will keep for up to four days, whereas you should only store it for a maximum of one day in the normal fridge compartment.

In any case, you should consume fish products within a short period of time or use the chest freezer: herring can be stored there for up to two months. This way, you can enjoy herring and its nutritional value without the risk of spoiled fish.

*All specifications given are to be considered as guideline values, and depend in each case on the type of food and on the proper storage without interruption of the cold chain from harvest/production through to the Liebherr appliance. Should food products have information about minimum shelf life, the date on the packaging always applies.
