Storing berries: what you need to know
We encounter red fruits all year round on bushes or in the forest. However, not all berries are suitable for consumption. Once you have picked or harvested edible berries, the question arises: how can you store berries so that they remain fresh and edible? Here you can find out how to store and prepare berries correctly in the fridge or freezer.
The key points
- Berries taste best fresh, but they can also be frozen or stored in the fridge.
- Avoid confusion with poisonous berries and only harvest fruits that can be clearly identified. Wash or heat wild berries to prevent infection.
- Berries stay fresh longer in the BioFresh Fruit & Vegetable safe thanks to optimal humidity and temperature. Frozen berries can be stored for up to 12 months.

Picking berries: what you must keep in mind

Berry picking is a popular activity in many regions of the world, whether it’s while out walking in the countryside or in your own garden. It is important to only pick berries that are ripe and clearly edible, depending on the harvest season, as some varieties can be poisonous. Be sure to collect sustainably and do not damage plants.
The image of dangerous parasites often comes to mind when picking wild berries. The eggs of the parasites can attach themselves to low-lying bushes via animal excrement and pose a potential health risk to humans. However, you can prevent infection by only picking berries that grow at waist height or higher. In addition, thorough washing of hands and the harvested produce, and in particular heating the berries to above 60 °C, protects against infection.

Storing and using berries
Many berries can be made into delicious jams or used to add flavour to fresh drinks in summer. Combined with fresh mint leaves, they are a healthy and sustainable alternative to sugary lemonades and iced teas. Berries can also be pureed or work wonderfully well added whole to your morning muesli.
Berries are best eaten fresh. However, if you would like to store the harvest for longer, you can keep the washed and lightly dried berries in a Liebherr fridge. Berries stay fresh significantly longer in the BioFreshFruit & Vegetable safe thanks to optimal temperature and humidity conditions. The precisely calibrated cooling technology ensures temperatures just above 0 °C, while the high humidity protects the cell structure of the berries and prevents them from drying out. This preserves flavour, vitamins and nutrients. Compared to conventional storage, BioFresh technology significantly extends shelf life, allowing you to enjoy your berries for longer.
