The key points

  • Pears are particularly sweet, low in fat and rich in vitamins, minerals and fibre.
  • They’re considered to be easy to digest and easier on the stomach than many other types of fruit.
  • Pears are best stored in a cool place.
  • The Williams Christ pear is not just a popular pear to eat – it’s also used to produce very fine fruit brandies.

Pears: sweet as sugar, full of vitamins and low in fat

Although there are fruits containing fewer calories, with less than 0.5 g of fat per 100 g the pear is truly impressive and you really can eat it without having a guilty conscience. In addition, healthy pears contain valuable vitamins and nutrients, as well as minerals and fibre. Another plus point for the pear is that it’s easy to digest and is considered to be a fruit that’s particularly easy on the stomach because it doesn’t contain much acid compared to an apple, for example. Here’s a tip: if you’re someone whose digestive system is more on the sensitive side, it’s a good idea to consume pears cooked. This is because pears that are still hard can irritate the bowel and really torment the stomach.

Pears are best stored in a cool place.

If you want to store pears for as long as possible and enjoy them fresh, you should keep them cool. A pear stored in the fridge will stay fresh for up to 26 days. In a BioFresh safe from Liebherr, it will even last for up to 55 days. The specially developed technology creates the perfect storage conditions in which the pears’ flavour, consistency and vitaminsare retained for much longer.

And if you want to store pears for even longer, they can also be frozen. The best fruit to use for this is ripe but firm fruit that has been peeled, had the core removed and been chopped into pieces beforehand. Pears can be stored in a freezer with NoFrost technology. They can be kept in there for up to twelve months so they’re always available – without the hassle of defrosting or freezer burn.

Williams Christ pear – vitamins in a bottle?

As you can see, the pear has plenty to offer and is justifiably high up on the popularity scale. And for many people, this isn’t just because of its sweet and juicy taste or the many vitamins that the pear contains, but also because it makes a popular fruit brandy or liqueur – but obviously without the vitamins in this case. The Williams Christ pear variety is used to produce these drinks. Most people will also know this as the pear in the bottle. But how exactly does the pear get inside the bottle used for this ever-popular type of spirit? When the pears hanging on a tree are still very small, the bottle is placed over the pear and tied to a branch. The pear essentially grows inside the bottle. Once it’s harvested, the bottle is then removed from the branch together with the pear, briefly rinsed and the schnapps is poured on top.

*All specifications given are to be considered as guideline values, and depend in each case on the type of foodstuffs and on the proper storage without interruption of the cold chain from harvest/production through to the Liebherr appliance. Should food products have information about minimum shelf life, the date on the packaging always applies.
