The new Liebherr site in Nambsheim

This project is part of a regional restructuring initiative, launched after the closure of the Fessenheim nuclear power plant. The Eco Rhena zone has been identified as a strategic site, close to the Rhine port and Liebherr’s historic infrastructures. The site was designed in close collaboration with the local authorities, in compliance with environmental regulations and through ongoing dialogue with local residents.

Liebherr-EMtec Nambsheim is committed to a practical environmental approach, aiming for a BREEAM “Very Good” rating for design and construction. This approach involves rigorous management of the project’s overall environmental impact throughout the construction phase.

An independent ecologist plays a central role in this process. As a specialist in natural equilibrium, their role is to:

• identify the plant and animal species present on the site
• monitor the animals during sensitive periods (breeding season, migration season, etc.)
• recommend measures to promote biodiversity (orchards, hedges, nest boxes, refuge areas, etc.)
• ensure that environmental commitments (BREEAM, local regulations) are met
• document and track all actions taken

The proposed developments are integrated into the project: the landscape has been designed to blend in with the natural environment and promote local biodiversity. This expert oversight ensures that environmental considerations are effectively and measurably incorporated into the construction and operation of the site, in line with the RE2020 standard.

All rainwater will be infiltrated and used in a non-potable water system for on-site consumption. The tree species selected are native to the area to preserve biodiversity. The design of the fencing allows wildlife to move freely whilst the site is in operation.

Liebherr-EMtec Nambsheim combines proven technologies, rational automation and intelligent control. The use of geothermal energy to heat buildings is a good example of this. Electricity generated by photovoltaic panels will be used for self-consumption. Energy management is ensured by a network of CO₂ sensors, presence detectors and anemometers, which measure parameters enabling the technical equipment to be controlled in real time according to occupancy and weather conditions.

It is supported by an ISO 50001 certified management system, ensuring rigorous control of energy consumption. The goal: achieving sustainable performance through resource-consciousness, method and innovation.

From the outset, the project aimed to minimise its impact on the surrounding environment. Delivery areas are located inside the building, sound, which reduces noise, visual and light pollution to an absolute minimum. This ‘encapsulated’ model required a several million euro investment to ensure the Nambsheim site is well integrated into its environment.

Dialogue with local stakeholders is structured, regular and transparent. Liebherr works closely with local authorities, economic networks and industrial bodies. Local residents are directly involved in the process. The Group has organised a number of discussion forums, including an optional preliminary consultation and a public information meeting, to present the project and address local concerns. This approach reflects a strong commitment to regional integration and collaboration.

This site embodies a successful, relocalised industrial model, where vertical integration (an industrial strategy in which a company brings several stages of its value chain in-house, rather than outsourcing them) enables better control over quality, lead times and innovation. It also demonstrates Liebherr’s ability to invest in industry whilst respecting local communities and the environment. It marks a significant milestone in the Group’s commitment to manufacturing in Europe, with greater autonomy and control.

It was designed to combine industrial performance, controlled innovation and social responsibility. Liebherr-EMtec Nambsheim is a site built to last, evolve and inspire other projects within the Group. Its flexible, modular and well-integrated design makes it a model for the future of European industry.

By 2030, over 200 jobs will have been created. These positions are designed to be sustainable, evolving and accessible throughout the Colmar basin.
