New Orient Development Ltd is developing a new residential project on the site at Lot No. 2195 in D.D. 244 in Ho Chung, Sai Kung. The design was created by P&T Architects Ltd. Two Liebherr NC-B 12-70 tower cranes are being used for the lifting work on site. The cranes lift construction materials, ensuring a steady flow of materials across the site.
Flat-Top crane built for confined sites
The NC-B 12-70 belongs to Liebherr's Flat-Top range, a series purpose-built for construction sites where space is at a premium. The crane achieves a maximum lifting capacity of 12 tonnes and a maximum radius of 70 metres, with a tip load of 2,000 kilograms at maximum jib length. Its freestanding hook height reaches up to 76.9 metres. By doing away with the conventional A-frame at the tower head, the flat-top design has a lower overall height. This is a particular advantage on sites such as Ho Chung, where space is limited and residential buildings, hills and watercourses sit in close proximity.
For assembly, the NC-B 12-70's slewing part, including a 70 metre jib, can be transported to site using standard-sized containers, and the crane's LiConnect quick connection system allows the jib to be assembled in five metre sections, supporting an efficient set-up on site. On site in Ho Chung, the cranes are tasked with lifting general construction materials, keeping the supply of materials moving across the working area throughout the foundation and excavation phase.
Fast, low-impact dismantling after completion
A key consideration for this site was the process for removing the cranes once their work is complete. Rather than a lengthy, staged dismantling process, both NC-B 12-70 cranes will be taken down using a single 100 tonne mobile crane. This approach shortens the dismantling period and reduces the logistical footprint on site at the end of the construction phase, an important factor on a site bordered by existing residential development.
Building responsibly in an established neighbourhood
Construction phase 1 covers a site area of 7,102 square metres and comprises 26 houses of up to three storeys plus one basement level, with a total gross floor area of up to 5,262 square metres.
The compact dimensions and efficient operation of the NC-B 12-70 cranes support a construction process designed to minimise disruption to the surrounding neighbourhood, while maintaining a consistent pace of work through to the planned completion of the foundation, excavation and soil nailing works.
