Interview with Senior System Engineer Coco Zhang Zhen

Question 1: Ms. Zhang Zhen, why do you work for Liebherr in China and what is so exciting about it, compared to working at successful local competitors?
问题1:你为什么要在中国为利勃海尔工作? 和其他优秀的竞争者相比,有什么令你兴奋的?
Coco Zhang Zhen: Liebherr stands for social responsibility. The Liebherr team is innovative, positive, experienced and energetic. I like the Liebherr brand and wanted to join the team in China. I believe I will have a successful future in this excellent company. The quick development of not only China’s high-speed train technology but also e-mobility/green power is continuing and we as Liebherr are a part of it. China needs new technology to further boost its “going global” railway strategy. The country is the key development market for e-mobility applications and Liebherr can participate in this development through our team here in China. Our collaborative effort will create a win-win situation for the community and the Liebherr team.

Question 2: Talking about technologies, which are the exciting innovations that you work on at Liebherr?
问题2:谈到技术,你在利勃海尔发现的最令人兴奋的是什么?
Coco Zhang Zhen: The Air Cycle System technology also called ACS technology is the first one, which I am deeply attracted to as an experienced Senior HVAC System Engineer. It only uses ambient air and no climate harming chemical refrigerants and is a simplified ecofriendly way of providing passenger comfort. Next to ACS technology, I am also interested in CO2 as an alternative cooling method for railway applications, thermal conditioning of e-mobility applications and future hydraulic applications. The most exciting thing about working at Liebherr is the living spirit of innovation within our team and the company as such. Liebherr always goes for the forefront in technology. As a technology-driver, the company is the right place for me. It inspires me, provides energy for my daily work and lets me feel passion for technology. Here I am not only doing adjustments of classical vapor cycle air conditioning unit designs; I am also a real designer and a creator for future applications.

Question 3: What are the advantages of ACS technology? Do you see any critical issues?
问题3:对于ACS技术的优势,您如何评估已知的劣势?
Coco Zhang Zhen: Of course, ACS is the most advanced technology for refrigeration today. Therefore implementing this technology in China will evoke technological competition and increase the competitiveness of the Chinese railway industry as such. Liebherr has made a great effort to develop and apply ACS through the last decades and provides a mature technology to the market.
张珍:当然,ACS是当今最先进的制冷技术。因此,很必要在中国实施这一技术用以将加强技术竞争,提高中国铁路行业的竞争优势。在过去的几十年里,利勃海尔一直致力于ACS的开发和应用,为市场提供了成熟的技术。
Liebherr met also difficulties while promoting and applying this technology already widely in use in Aerospace within the railway industry, but never gave up. During the last year, our Chinese customers have been well informed about the ACS technology. They are aware about the disadvantage of a comparable lower COP (coefficient of performance) as well as the convincing advantages such as better overall life cycle costs and lower overall energy consumption under very high speed conditions. The so-called air drag effect of an ACS HVAC unit compared with a classical vapor cycle unit enables lower traction power for very-high-speed trains. We were able to see that the customers accept both disadvantage and advantages.

Consequently, in order to open up a new and successful chapter in railway technology made in China the customers want to apply the new technology of ACS and asked us to provide a proposal for a Chinese high-speed train and for export projects such as trains operating in Europe.

Question 4: The last question is personal, what is your wish for the future?

Coco Zhang Zhen: I would like to further develop my skills and the skills of the engineering team of Liebherr-Transportation Systems China. I wish to work with experienced and ambitious colleagues with passion on our future here in China and together with our global Liebherr team. I believe this will be a beautiful future. I know that Liebherr invests highly in new technologies, i.e. in research and development. For me as an experienced engineer, this is the core of competition. I wish to create with the company more new technologies and new products which enable for our people a better and green life.
