Where engineering meets architecture: Liebherr cranes build the KJ Plein development in Den Haag

  • Two Liebherr 550 EC-H 20 Litronic cranes from Van der Spek’s rental fleet ensure construction progress in the heart of Den Haag
  • Precise climbing to hook heights of up to 120 metres in confined inner-city conditions
  • Powerful Liebherr technology supports the construction of the striking façades and high-rise structures

A distinctive new urban quarter is taking shape at KJ Plein in the centre of Den Haag, featuring two residential towers, commercial units and generous public spaces. Since late 2023, two Liebherr 550 EC-H 20 Litronic cranes have been in operation on site. These high-top tower cranes deliver high lifting capacities, precise control and efficient workflows in limited space, making an essential contribution to scheduled progress ahead of the planned completion in spring 2026.

Located directly next to Den Haag Central Station, the KJ Plein development is one of the most significant urban regeneration projects in the Netherlands’ third-largest city. The project includes two residential towers, each 93 metres tall, providing a total of 395 homes, a mix of owner-occupied, rental and social housing. Approximately 1,300 square metres of space for gastronomy and retail will complement the buildings. The project is designed by the renowned architecture practice Powerhouse Company.

To handle the complex lifting operations required for high-rise and façade construction, the developer is relying on the proven reliability of Liebherr technology. Two 550 EC-H 20 Litronic cranes from Van der Spek Netherlands’ rental fleet have been in use since November 2023. With hook heights of up to 120 metres and three climbing stages, they ensure the precise positioning of precast elements, reinforcement, formwork components and façade modules.

Efficiency and precision in the city centre

The construction site is located in Den Haag’s busy station district, an environment defined by limited space and strict delivery windows. The two Liebherr cranes ensure safe and efficient material handling under these conditions, thanks to their compact design, high lifting capacity and highly responsive control system.

A particular focus has been the installation of the complex façade components. In total, 10,000 aluminium cassette panels, 7,600 square metres of GRC façade elements and more than 11,000 square metres of aluminium window frames have been installed with millimetre precision using the Liebherr cranes. Due to the proximity to major transport routes and residential areas, parts of the work had to be carried out at night under special noise and lighting regulations.

Technical strength with vision

The Liebherr 550 EC-H 20 Litronic High-Top cranes combine robustness with efficiency. The precise Litronic control system and proven modular design allow flexible adaptation to changing construction phases. With lifting capacities of up to 20 tonnes and a low number of climbing operations required, construction can progress without extended interruptions.

The KJ Plein project is a showcase of modern, sustainable urban development in the Netherlands. In addition to energy-efficient construction, the creation of high-quality public spaces plays a central role. Green roof terraces, inner courtyards and outdoor areas will contribute to the quality of life for future residents.
