Press releases | 04/30/2024 ESTA Award for Liebherr-Werk Nenzing

The ESTA Awards are the highest distinction for the crane and heavy-lift industry. This year, Liebherr-Werk Nenzing GmbH won the award in the category "Safety". The safety concept for lifting work with crawler cranes on floating units convinced the jury.

"The award is recognition of our efforts to design safe cranes and construction machines - especially as it is the second award in this category since 2022. As a leading manufacturer of cranes, the safety of jobsite personnel is of the utmost importance to us. Our digital solutions and assistance systems are a direct result of this commitment," says Gerhard Frainer, Managing Director for Sales at Liebherr-Werk Nenzing GmbH, during the awards ceremony.

Floating unit operation

Usually, only load charts on paper are available for operation on a floating unit – without a load moment limitation integrated into the control system. The risk of overloading or losing the stability of the crane is correspondingly high. To minimise these risks, the mode "floating unit operation" is applied in the crane. The operating mode contains load curves for different heeling angles (0°, 1°, 2°, 3°) with corresponding protection via the load moment limitation. The barge inclination is monitored during the entire operation and displayed to the crane driver. If the permissible limit value is exceeded, a corresponding warning is issued. Additionally, it prevents the maximum boom angle from being exceeded when the load is set down.

Liebherr’s proven assistance system “Vertical Line Finder” is part of the safety concept. This enables the crane driver to automatically avoid all inclined lifts at the touch of a button – especially those caused by changes in the barge inclination as a result of the shift in the centre of gravity when lifting and setting down the load.
