The Mechanical Engineer (ME) researches, develops, designs and tests mechanical components and systems for use in mining equipment. In addition to the technical aspects, the engineer also effectively communicates and collaborates with a wide variety of other positions in the performance of the job.

Responsibilities

Mechanical Engineer 1:

  • Assists Design Drafters in developing the mechanical design of products using drafting tools or Computer-Assisted Design (CAD) or drafting equipment and software.
  • Works with Engineers to specify type and size of hydraulic components and fittings, structural members, bearings, gearing, heat transfer, and engine related equipment.
  • Researches, designs, installs, tests, analyzes, and maintains machined parts, castings, weld fabrications, and other components of mechanical systems and processes to meet requirements, applying knowledge of engineering principles
  • Computes and estimates loading on structural members, air/hydraulic flow velocity rates, cylinder speeds, steering system calculations, pump inlet conditions, and heat transfer calculations for on air/hydraulic/fuel flow systems.
  • Works independently and as a team member with other Engineers, Designers, and production personnel or on ad hoc projects.
  • Interacts with customers and suppliers as part of a team.

Mechanical Engineer 2:

  • All duties of ME1, plus:
  • Confers with Engineers and other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, and provide technical information.
  • Specifies mechanical system, and/or engine system components, or directs modification of truck components to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications.
  • Works with other engineers to research and analyze customer design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications.
  • Investigates mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical system failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation, and to make recommendations to maintenance crew.
  • Reads and interprets maintenance and operators manuals, blueprints, technical drawings, hydraulic schematics, pressure traces, electrical schematics, and computer-generated reports.
  • Provides feedback to other Engineers on customer problems and needs related to mechanical/engine components and systems.
  • Performs installation, testing, and maintenance procedures to ensure that mechanical system components are installed and functioning according to specifications.
  • Approves drawings and contributes in design reviews.

​​​​​​​Mechanical Engineer 3:

  • All duties of ME2, plus:
  • Works independently with suppliers to obtain component information and establish component specifications.
  • Specifies type and size of equipment such as bearings, gear drives, engines, radiators, and air/hydraulic/fuel piping.
  • Develops and oversees installation, testing and maintenance procedures to ensure that mechanical system components are installed and functioning according to specifications.
  • Researches and analyzes customer design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications.
  • Interacts independently with customers or suppliers in routine situations.
  • Collaborates cross-functionally to integrate mechanical/engine components and systems into mining equipment.
  • Plans projects including scope, schedule and provides cross-functional updates and reports.
  • Advises engineers as a subject matter expert.

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Mechanical Engineer 4 (Senior):

  • All duties of ME 3, plus:
  • Trains, mentors, and develops Engineers and other personnel on operating procedures, resolving system malfunctions, and providing technical information.
  • Reviews and approves designs of mechanical system, and/or engine system components, or direct modifications of truck components to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications.
  • Independently represents Liebherr to customers and suppliers in diverse situations.
  • Plans multiple projects in parallel including resource allocation

Competencies

Mechanical Engineer 1:

  • A Master of Science Degree (MS) or, a Bachelor of Science Degree (BSME/MET) or, Associate of Science Degree (ASEE) with 10 years of relevant mechanical experience in an engineering environment.
  • Working knowledge of 3D drafting tools, CAD or numerical analysis tools and software.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance manuals, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as algebra, probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Knowledge of technical fundamentals of mechanical engineering.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to use products from Microsoft Office.

Mechanical Engineer 2:

  • A Master of Science Degree (MS) with 1 years of relevant mechanical experience in an engineering environment or, a Bachelor of Science Degree (BSME/MET) with 2 years of relevant mechanical experience in an engineering environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency of Mechanical Engineer 1, plus:
  • Proficient knowledge of modeling and multidimensional tools.
  • Basic knowledge of low voltage electrical systems design and function
  • Ability to provide component level costing reports
  • Ability to initiate technical discussions with customers and suppliers
  • Ability to put information together for design reviews

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Mechanical Engineer 3:

  • A Master of Science Degree (MS) with  4 to 6 years of relevant mechanical experience in an engineering environment or, a Bachelor of Science Degree (BSME/MET) with 6 to 8 years of relevant mechanical experience in an engineering environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency of Mechanical Engineer 2, plus:
  • Skill in planning, managing, and directing resources and projects and in reporting project status to a cross-functional audience. Able to utilize MS Project to plan projects.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to perform root cause analysis per established standard practices
  • Ability to provide system level costing reports
  • Ability to guide and lead personnel within temporary projects
  • Experience in assuring that products meet regulatory requirements
  • Ability to initialize and execute projects without prior subject experience and with minimal guidance
  • Patience and ability to overcome technical or administrative adversity.
  • Ability to lead design reviews and present information in a professional manner.

Mechanical Engineer 4 (Senior):​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

  • A Master of Science Degree (MS) with 6 to 8 years of relevant mechanical experience in an engineering environment or, a Bachelor of Science Degree (BSME/MET) with 8 to 10 years of relevant mechanical experience in an engineering environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency of Mechanical Engineer 3, plus:
  • Knowledge of financial data and cross-functional costing procedures.
  • Ability to understand and troubleshoot system logic.
  • Project planning skills for parallel projects including resource management and use of project management software
  • Experienced, skillful negotiator able to find consensus within a group with diverse opinions
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Ability and willingness to make decisions of consequence

Additional Requirements:

  • Travel domestically and internationally up to 20% of the time.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license and passport.
  • Ability to maintain Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) certification.
  • This position is remote work eligible (3 days in office, 2 days remote).​​​​​​​
