Railway rolling stock

Safe, comfortable and more efficient rail transport

Liebherr is a key player in the rolling stock market, offering innovative solutions across all segments, from light rail vehicles to high-speed trains. Rolling stock manufacturers worldwide rely on advanced Liebherr technologies and services.

HVAC Systems

Liebherr provides heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for railway rolling stock, focusing on low-GWP (global warming potential) refrigerants like CO2 and propane. Liebherr excels in air cycle technology that uses no refrigerants. Further, Liebherr has developed a modular air-conditioning system, which serves as a universal HVAC standard for multiple railway platforms

Hydraulic systems

Both passive and active hydraulic systems are available for various railway applications, including braking, damping, axle steering, and levelling. These systems enhance safety, stability, and comfort by delivering precise control and responsiveness for railway vehicles. Looking to improve the longevity of the rail infrastructure, Liebherr’s active controlled axle steering system considerably reduces wear on tracks and wheels.

Meeting regional standards

Liebherr maintains a network of local offices and experts, ensuring the products meet regional standards and regulations. By adapting products through collaborative partnerships and an understanding of operational characteristics, Liebherr provides tailored, compliant, and effective solutions. Continuous innovation and localized expertise allow Liebherr to address the specific needs of different regions effectively.

Solutions for rolling stock

Liebherr offers cutting-edge solutions for rolling stock, enhancing performance, safety, and passenger comfort. Liebherr sets the standard for excellence in the rail industry. A commitment to continuous innovation and localized expertise ensures that Liebherr products meet the diverse needs of operators worldwide, delivering reliable and efficient performance in every journey.

"Brake-by-wire"

Siemens and Liebherr develop electro-hydraulic brake actuator

Following the trend of air-free technology on board rolling stock, Liebherr, in collaboration with Siemens, developed an electro-hydraulic brake actuator. Unlike the conventional pneumatic brake, with the new air-free Siemens Brake System the control of the brake is fully electrical (“brake-by-wire”). All piping and all pneumatic components for controlling the brake can be eliminated.

Support of the entire product life cycle

Liebherr designs and creates railway rolling stock solutions that are easy to test and maintain, exceptionally reliable, and exceed market expectations. The commitment extends beyond development and manufacturing, offering comprehensive service and support throughout the product lifecycle.

Case studies - Railway rolling stock

FLIRT electrical multiple unit

Liebherr supplies to Stadler Polska series-produced propane-based HVAC systems for FLIRT trains (Fast Light Intercity and Regional Train).

Autorail à Grande Capacité (AGC)

HVAC units developed and manufactured by Liebherr are integrated in SNCF’s Autorail à Grand Capacité (AGC) trains by Bombardier, which are operated in the Occitania Region (France). The air-conditioning system based on environmentally friendly air cycle technology uses only ambient air as a coolant instead of conventional chemical refrigerants.

Twindexx Swiss Express

With its electro-hydraulic actuator, Liebherr is on board of the Alstom Twindexx, the flagship of SBB's long-distance services.

Etihad DMU

The saloon and cab HVAC units are installed on high-speed diesel multiple unit trains manufactured by the Chinese company CRRC. The trains are operated by Etihad Rail, the national railway company of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), on UAE’s first national rail network.

X-Wagen

In close collaboration with Siemens Liebherr developed and produces a compact, closed, electrohydraulic brake actuator including all the components necessary to build-up and release the brake force as well as local control. The Siemens braking system demonstrates its advantages on the new modern underground railway in Vienna.

CTA 7000

Liebherr supplies level control systems for its customer CRRC Sifang America. These are installed in the 7000 series rail vehicles operated by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA).
