Liebherr Selected to Equip Light Rail Vehicles in San Francisco

The contract order comprises 215 car sets and additional 45 car sets as an option for the light rail vehicles which Siemens will build at its rail manufacturing hub in Sacramento, California (USA). These vehicles will be operated by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) on the lines connecting the neighborhoods of San Francisco. The deliveries of the upper articulation connections units to Siemens will start in 2016.

The upper articulation connection is a special hydraulic spring, which is integrated in a very compact space envelope above the articulation between two car body segments. Due to its design, the spring always brings the car bodies from different roll angles back to the neutral position. The spring force in the upper link limits wheel unloading and enhances ride comfort in curves.

Liebherr-Transportation Systems and Siemens have a long-term partnership and this contract constitutes the first Liebherr order for a U.S. Siemens project.
