What nutrients does iceberg lettuce contain?
In order to keep iceberg lettuce and its nutrients fresh and crisp for as long as possible, it used to be transported on ice. This allowed iceberg lettuce to undergo long transport routes without losing its freshness and taste. Its name also dates back to this period, which remains firmly embedded in people’s minds to this day.
The lettuce consists of approximately 95 percent water. With just 14 calories per 100 grams, iceberg lettuce is particularly low in calories. It contains large amounts of vitamins and minerals, which is what makes iceberg lettuce so healthy. The bitter substances it contains stimulate the digestive juices, which has a correspondingly positive effect on the digestive system.

How to keep iceberg lettuce fresh and retain its nutrients
As iceberg lettuce has a relatively neutral taste, it is suitable for many dishes and can be combined with both savoury and sweet dressings. However, it is also ideal as a topping on a delicious sandwich or as a filling in a fresh wrap.
It is primarily its shelf life that distinguishes iceberg lettuce from other types of lettuce, such as butterhead lettuce or lamb’s lettuce. These are often sensitive to heat and cold, wilt easily and are then no longer fit for consumption. Another typical feature of iceberg lettuce is its very crisp leaves, which resemble the shape of a scallop shell.
To keep iceberg lettuce fresh and nutritious for as long as possible, it should be stored in the fridge. Lettuce will keep for up to 7 days in a regular fridge compartment. A fridge with Liebherr’s BioFresh technology is suitable for longer storage. The special fresh food compartment – the Fruit & Vegetable safe – maintains a constant low temperature of just above 0 °C in combination with high humidity. This keeps sensitive food fresh for longer. Iceberg lettuce stays fresh for up to 13 days longer in this fresh food compartment.
*All specifications given are to be considered as guideline values, and depend in each case on the type of foodstuffs and on the proper storage without interruption of the cold chain from harvest/production through to the Liebherr appliance. Should food products have information about minimum shelf life, the date on the packaging always applies.
