Comprehensive evaluation options, intuitively visualized
Liebherr-Verzahntechnik GmbH continues to advance waviness analysis in gear metrology, with a focus on powerful evaluation capabilities and ease of use.
The demands placed on gear metrology are steadily increasing. In e-mobility in particular, identifying and preventing unwanted gearbox noise is critical. Alongside highly accurate measurements, advanced analysis options are becoming ever more important. First presented at EMO Hannover 2025, waviness analysis enables precise evaluation of noise generation in gearboxes.

Further optimization of waviness analysis
A key aspect of this development is the identification of waviness components in gear measurement curves. In addition to single-flank analysis, evaluation as a closed curve across the entire gear circumference is also possible. This can be based either on full-gear measurements or on what are known as 4+X measurements, which deliver comparable results with significantlyless effort using as few as six to eight measured teeth.
Using nonlinear optimization, the system calculates the frequencies and – where a topography measurement is available – the helix angles of the waviness components. These parameters are crucial for assessing potential sources of noise excitation in the gearbox. Tooth modifications such as crowning and relief can be selectively included or excluded.
Intuitive visualization of calculation results
Identifying the causes of unwanted noise at end-of-line test benches often resembles detective work. To speed up the identification of these “ghost frequencies”, the new waviness analysis provides extensive visualization tools and an intuitive user interface. Features such as polar plots of closed curves or 3D visualizations of topography measurements make it easier to interpret and assess the calculated waviness components.
