Energy flexible manufacturing powered by photovoltaics
With a new photovoltaic system and the PrONergy research project, Liebherr-Verzahntechnik GmbH is working to intelligently integrate production and energy supply.
At its site in Kempten, Liebherr-Verzahntechnik GmbH is currently installing a photovoltaic system with a peak capacity of around 2 MWp. The aim is to use as much of the electricity generated as possible directly in its own production processes, with plans to incorporate battery storage systems in the future.
At the same time, Liebherr is collaborating on the PrONergy research project with HAWE Hydraulik SE, Janitza electronics GmbH and Kempten University of Applied Sciences – represented by the Institute for Production and Information Technology (IPI) and the Institute for Data Optimized Manufacturing (IDF). The project focuses on using artificial intelligence to significantly reduce the energy consumption of production systems while optimizing the use of renewable energy. The joint project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

AI-supported energy efficient production
The concept is being tested on a highly automated production system at HAWE Hydraulik, where a Liebherr pallet handling system (PHS) supplies workpieces automatically. Until now, system control has focused primarily on productivity, availability and short transport times. The project introduces an additional parameter: the availability of energy from a photovoltaic system. In future, energy intensive machining operations could be scheduled for times when sufficient solar power is available, while also reducing peak loads.
Using machine learning, the system will automatically adjust its production parameters based on the available energy supply. The goal is to combine efficiency, flexibility and energy optimized operation in a single, intelligent production concept – an approach that could also be applied at Liebherr.
