As “Team Gen 6,” eight leading German defense and aerospace companies are ready to actively help shape Europe’s future air combat system in collaboration with European partners. Six leading Spanish defense and aerospace companies are launching a similar initiative.
The German and French governments have announced a realignment of the European Future Combat Air System (FCAS). While the development of the overarching “System of Systems” continues as planned, the development of the integrated sixth-generation fighter aircraft requires a new, effective industrial setup. For this reason, eight leading German defense and aerospace companies have joined forces to form “Team Gen 6.” This partnership combines competencies, experience, and capabilities that – together with additional European partners – are necessary for the development and delivery of a sixth-generation fighter jet. The integration of such a fighter aircraft, as well as other existing and future manned and unmanned platforms, into the System of Systems will constitute Europe’s air combat system of the future. Closely linked with the German partners, the Spanish industry is also forming up with companies such as Indra, Airbus Defence and Space, Grupo Oesia, GMV, ITP, and Sener.
In a joint statement, the CEOs of Airbus Defence and Space, AUTOFLUG, Diehl Defence, HENSOLDT, Liebherr, MBDA Deutschland, MTU Aero Engines, and Rohde & Schwarz said: “Geopolitical developments make it strategically imperative to consistently enable the air forces for national and alliance defense. We therefore welcome the clear political decision. An effective new setup is now indispensable to achieve our common goal: a superior European air combat system for our collective security.”
Key Technologies for Security and Economic Strength
In recent years, German industry has made decisive pioneering achievements here: key technologies range from state-of-the-art sensors and self-protection systems to mission management and electromagnetic warfare. Added to this are stealth (low observability), AI-supported, resilient, and secure real-time networking (edge computing), military communication and electronics, engine technologies, flight control, onboard, rescue, and safety systems, as well as precise effectors. Beyond military benefits, these innovations – which also serve civilian purposes – secure highly qualified jobs in the long term and strengthen European supply chains.
Cooperation as Equals
The participating companies expressly emphasize their commitment to multinational cooperation. A comprehensive European partnership at eye level can only succeed if it is supported by strong national industries and underpinned by political will. “We can only overcome the technological and financial challenges of the sixth generation together as Europeans,” the partners emphasized. “True cooperation is demonstrated by finding functional, pragmatic solutions.”
