Liebherr cranes by Riedel Bau AG support new ULMICUM project in Rostock

  • Two Liebherr 340 EC-B Flat-Top cranes ensure smooth construction progress on the new library and institute building
  • Efficient material handling and precise operation even under restricted conditions
  • Riedel Bau AG relies on the proven quality of Liebherr cranes

For the construction of the new “ULMICUM” on the Ulmenstraße campus of the University of Rostock, two Liebherr 340 EC-B tower cranes from Riedel Bau AG are securing the timely completion of the structural works. The cranes impress with rapid assembly, high load capacities and precise operation, even in the vicinity of listed neighbouring buildings and nearby railway tracks. They will remain in place until at least 2027 to support efficient material transport and the installation of exposed concrete element.

On the historic Ulmenstraße campus of the University of Rostock, a modern complex is taking shape with the “ULMICUM”, comprising a library with seminar centre, administration offices and institute facilities. For the structural works, which began in June 2024 and are scheduled for completion by 2026, the contractor Riedel Bau AG is relying on two high-performance Liebherr tower cranes from the EC-B series.

Reliable technology for demanding structural works

The Flat-Top cranes support all stages of construction from setting up the wall formwork to concreting and installing prefabricated sections. The EC-B series demonstrates its strengths with fast assembly, easy access for operation and maintenance, and high lifting capacity at maximum reach. With hook heights and jib lengths precisely adapted to the site requirements, the cranes ensure an efficient flow of materials, from unloading trucks to the millimetre-accurate positioning of formwork elements.

Powerful service and safe crane operation despite complex conditions

For the ULMICUM project, Riedel Bau AG has deliberately chosen Liebherr cranes and service partner Beutlhauser. A strong service partner is a priority for Riedel Bau. “We expect short response times, competent and swift troubleshooting when required, and expert advice in challenging assembly and dismantling situations.” With numerous branches across various regions, Beutlhauser can meet these expectations.

Special challenges such as the stringent requirements for exposed concrete surfaces, restricted crane operation near the adjacent railway line make the use of powerful and precisely controllable cranes indispensable. In addition, listed buildings are located within the cranes’ slewing range, requiring particularly careful planning. Liebherr’s working range limitation system is deployed to ensure the protection of sensitive areas and historic structures.

The two Liebherr cranes are expected to remain on site until mid-2027, providing reliable support for both the interior works and facade installation.
