At the start of the year, the Max Bögl Group ordered five LTM 1750-9.1 cranes from Liebherr to support the expansion of wind energy. Demand for wind turbines is high and continues to rise. Bögl has now taken delivery of the first LTM 1750-9.1 from the Liebherr plant in Ehingen. It is currently proving its worth during the installation of wind turbine towers in Papenburg. The remaining four LTM 1750-9.1s will be delivered in stages by February 2027.
Stefan Bögl, CEO of the Max Bögl Group, travelled in person to the Liebherr factory in Ehingen to take delivery of the first LTM 1750-9.1: “Liebherr has long been our reliable partner when it comes to expanding our in-house construction machinery fleet. This enables us to continue investing in our own vertical integration, allowing us to meet the rising demand for hybrid towers quickly and reliably. Thanks to their high lifting capacity and rapid deployment, the newly acquired mobile cranes are perfectly suited for use on our wind farm construction sites.”
Max Bögl is the market and technology leader for hybrid towers in Germany. The company, headquartered in Sengenthal, near Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate, is continuing to expand its production and assembly capacities in response to increased demand and is therefore expanding its fleet of large mobile cranes.
Hybrid towers consist of two components: concrete and steel. The concrete tower alone, which is assembled from over 30 individual rings, can reach a height of 110 metres, depending on the hub height. The rings weigh up to 60 tonnes and have diameters of up to 12 metres. “The LTM 1750-9.1 is an ideal crane for erecting our hybrid towers. As well as its high lifting capacity, it can also be set up quickly, meaning it can be moved between individual projects in a short space of time,” said Bögl.
The new LTM 1750-9.1 was transported from the manufacturer’s factory in southern Germany to Papenburg in the far north, near the Dutch border. Its task there is to erect 20 concrete towers for wind turbines, each with a hub height of 164 metres, within 17 weeks. The concrete towers for these turbines are each 86 metres high. This involves lifting loads of up to 56 tonnes to this height. To achieve this, the crane’s 52-metre-long telescopic boom is extended using lattice sections to a roller head height of around 100 metres. “As the components become heavier and the turbines taller, you need the right equipment. The LTM 1750-9.1 is perfectly suited to the requirements of our construction site. It is always a challenge to position our concrete rings on the tower with millimetre precision in changing weather conditions. With the Liebherr crane, the assembly process runs smoothly,” says Florian Herdegen, site manager for tower assembly at Max Bögl.
