Press releases | 04/08/2019 LB 16 unplugged: The first battery-powered drilling rig in the world

  • Available in Europe from summer 2019
  • Electro-hydraulic drive and battery mode
  • Local Zero Emission
  • Same performance specifications as conventional version
  • Assistance systems for increased safety: Ground Pressure Visualization

The LB 16 unplugged is the first battery-powered drilling rig in the world. With the electro-hydraulic version, Liebherr presents the deep foundation machine with alternative drive concept. In doing so, Liebherr aims at providing the best possible combination of customer benefits, eco-friendliness and efficiency, as well as achieving new fields of application with Local Zero Emission.

The alternative drive of the LB 16 unplugged is also reflected in the integrated battery blocks mounted on the uppercarriage.

In awareness of its responsibility towards the environment and society, Liebherr presents the LB 16 unplugged: the first drilling rig on the market with Local Zero Emission. The brand-new Liebherr model does not only have an alternative drive concept, it can also be operated by battery without a cable, therefore: unplugged.

There are no restrictions in performance and application of the LB 16 unplugged when compared to the conventional version. Just as for the conventional machine with diesel engine, it can achieve maximum drilling diameters of 1,500 mm and drilling depths of 34.5 m. Operating weight is 55 t.

The innovative Liebherr machine has an electric engine with a system performance of 265 kW. The battery is designed to last for a 10-hour working day and can be simply recharged using a conventional jobsite electric supply (32 A, 63 A). Using a 125 A supply, the battery can be fast-charged in barely 7 hours. The alternative drive of the LB 16 unplugged is also reflected in the integrated battery blocks mounted on the uppercarriage.

Local Zero Emission

The absence of a combustion engine has two advantages: the LB 16 unplugged causes no local emissions and significantly less noise. Thus, the drilling rig is also suitable for operation in areas sensitive to noise. Increasing urbanization brought about, above all, strict laws concerning the operation of vehicles and machines within urban areas. For building projects, which have requirements deriving from emission regulations, the electrically driven LB 16 unplugged can score full points.

Innovative Assistance System Ground Pressure Visualization

In addition to the alternative drive, the LB 16 unplugged convinces with more safety and simpler application thanks to a state-of-the-art assistance system. The ground load-bearing capacity and the monitoring of the ground pressure are decisive for the safe operation of a construction machine. The Ground Pressure Visualization of the LB 16 unplugged calculates the current ground pressure of the machine in real time and compares it with the specified safety limits of the relevant position. The ground pressure is displayed in the operator's cab and the operator is permanently aware of whether the machine is situated in, or is approaching, a critical area. Dangerous work stages can so be avoided or adapted in good time.

Comfort in an Elegant Design: the new Operator’s Cab

The machine is equipped with a new cabin concept, which gives the LB 16 unplugged an elegant appearance and, above all, focuses on increased operator comfort. This is achieved through a modern air-conditioning system with improved airflow, an optimized field of vision and reduced noise protection, as well as an orthopaedic operator’s seat with integrated heating and cooling.
