The North African coastal state is one of the most important African markets for Liebherr. The activities of the Liebherr Group in Algeria date back to the 1980s. At that time, Liebherr had built a construction machinery factory for the state-owned enterprise ENMTP in Ain Smara. This hitherto largest industrial plant project was successfully completed in 1985. It formed the basis for the production joint venture Somatel-Liebherr Spa and for the sales and service company Liebherr Algérie, EURL.
Somatel-Liebherr Spa manufactures earthmoving equipment for the African market in Ain Smara near Constantine in eastern Algeria. Liebherr Algérie, EURL in the capital Algiers is responsible for sales and customer service in Algeria.
In July 2012, Liebherr and the Algerian company Somatel set up the production joint venture Somatel-Liebherr Spa. This joint venture produces earthmoving equipment such as wheel loaders, crawler loaders and excavators bearing the Liebherr brand for the African market. The new plant in Ain Smara started production in 2013.
