Press releases | 05/22/2017 World Premiere: At Ligna 2017, Liebherr is presenting the new L 580 LogHandler XPower®

  • L 580 LogHandler XPower® is particularly robust and scores points with extensive innovations for efficient log handling
  • L 580 LogHandler XPower® is currently available for order and delivery
  • Another trade fair highlight: A new, particularly manoeuvrable and robust L 518 Stereo Stereoloader
  • New Stereoloader models will be available from the second half of 2017

At this year’s Ligna in Hanover, Liebherr will premiere the new L 580 LogHandler XPower® for efficient log handling. The new edition is based on the successful XPower design of the Liebherr large wheel loaders. The L 580 LogHandler XPower® impresses with an extensive range of innovations and improvements regarding its robustness. Its special-purpose lift arm is specifically strengthened to offer a maximum range of nearly four meters, allowing the L 580 LogHandler XPower® to cover large work areas. Optimised timber grippers increase productivity, variable in size depending on application. The emission stage IV / Tier 4f was another highlight of the trade fair, confirming L 518 Stereo as a representative of the new generation of Stereoloaders.

The new L 580 LogHandler XPower® is celebrating its world premiere at the Ligna 2017. The trade fair exhibit is powered by an efficient 250kW / 340HP emission stage IV /Tier 4f diesel engine. The advanced, combined timber gripper has a hold-down plate, meaning that the L 580 LogHandler XPower® can grip up to 3.6 m² of round wood. Its maximum payload is 8,730 kg, with an operating weight of 36,650kg. The trade fair exhibit also showcases a rear mudguard and gripper monitor.

Efficient and powerful: the new L 580 LogHandler XPower®

Based on the tried-and-tested XPower® large wheel loaders, Liebherr has developed the L 580 LogHandler XPower® for the particular requirements of the timber industry. The L 580 LogHandler XPower® boasts high levels of performance and productivity wherever companies need to handle and transport large volumes of logs and tree trunks, making locations such as cellulose, paper, cardboard or packaging plants ideal areas of application. The L 580 LogHandler XPower® really comes into its own when covering transport routes requiring flexibility or transporting logs over longer distances at higher speeds.

As with the latest Liebherr large wheel loaders, the core element of the L 580 LogHandler XPower® is the power-split driveline that complies with Stage IV / Tier 4f emission standards. It combines the best of two worlds: the hydrostatic driveline, which is the most efficient type of drive for quick loading operations, and the mechanical drive, which is the most powerful and efficient drive over long distances and uphill. The exhaust gas after-treatment is performed using the reliable Liebherr SCR system. Thanks to the power-split XPower® driveline, the L 580 LogHandler XPower® always works with maximum power, reliability and efficiency regardless of the application. This results in significant savings in fuel consumption.

Numerous new features and investments for increased productivity

The special lift arm of the L 580 LogHandler XPower® offers a maximum reach of almost four metres, which means that tree trunks can be stacked over a large working area, allowing operators to use their storage facilities more efficiently. Liebherr has developed the Smooth Speed Reduction system (SSR system) for extra sensitive load handling. This intelligent control system offers safe operation and high levels of driving comfort as vibrations in the cab are significantly reduced. It prevents impacts and jerky movements and provides the working hydraulics with gentle damping. The special hydraulic impact damper system also ensures smooth travel by operating transversely to the direction of travel thereby providing permanent vibration damping.

Thanks to the range of timber grab variants and sizes, operators can configure the L 580 LogHandler XPower® to meet their specific needs. In the standard version, the grab holds 3.6 m2 of logs. Liebherr uses a tried-and-tested grab concept from the field of material handling technology. For instance, the grabs feature a slewing ring instead of a pin suspension, making them even more robust. A fine-link chain on the grab secures the tree trunks during transportation.

No compromises on safety and comfort

The L 580 LogHandler XPower® has special ballast at the rear, giving high levels of stability and eliminating the need to fill the larger width special tyres with water. Liebherr has also reinforced other core machine components such as the axles, the special lift arm and the hydraulic cylinders. To protect the machine, a hydraulically-adjustable log pusher with additional deflector plates is available for the L 580 LogHandler XPower® on customer request.

A wide step ensures safe access to the operator's cab and the cab door can be opened easily from the ground. The soundproofed cab with ROPS / FOPS protective structure provides a safe and comfortable working environment. The generous glass surfaces of the cab and an angled windscreen ensure outstanding visibility and an unobstructed view of the working equipment. The protective grid for the windscreen, which is fitted to the lift arm, does not restrict visibility. The rear-view camera comes as standard and is integrated into the touchscreen display. Liebherr also offers optional grab monitoring with a camera and an additional display.

Trade fair premiere of the new L 518 Stereo

Another notable addition to this year’s Ligna is the new Liebherr L 518 Stereo. Yet, at the heart of the new Stereoloaders is Liebherr’s trademark stereo-steering feature in this machine class, a combination of articulated steering and a steerable rear axle. The powerful design of the L 518 Stereo shows its strengths especially in industrial applications, such as the timber industry. The L 518 Stereo is fitted with new, powerful Z-unit bar linkage with hydraulic quick hitch and a 3.5m³ high-tipping bucket. The Ligna exhibit is fitted with a rear mudguard and a protective grill on the windscreen and headlamps, as required in the timber industry.

For more than two decades, the Liebherr Stereoloaders have been well-known for their reliable and manoeuvrable all-rounders. Both the new L 514 Stereo and L 518 Stereo models have these special qualities as well. They will be available from the second half of 2017 and can be viewed at various trade fairs.

New Z-unit bar linkage: bar linkage for all applications

Aside from these innovations, the new L 514 Stereo and L 518 Stereo captivate with new Z-unit bar linkage. It combines high breakout forces needed for applications such as earthmoving, for example, with strong holding force in the upper lift arms, which are necessary for industrial applications. Whether it involves excavation buckets or loading forks — operators can use all tool attachments efficiently with this new and powerful lift arm.

The powerful hydrostatic driveline also provides continuous acceleration. For applications with longer driving routes, Liebherr offers both models as “speeders”. In this version, the new Stereoloaders reach a maximum speed of 40km/h. Furthermore, there are more innovations in productivity and comfort, such as new diagonal cooling and the resonating Liebherr control lever.
