An LR 11350-P1800 with a parallel boom hoists a 340-tonne gondola on to a 110 metre turbine tower. The gross load for this application in Eemshaven (Netherlands) is 378 tonnes. The fast, efficient complete installation of the gondola makes wind turbine erection considerably easier.

The lattice sections are installed parallel to each other at the bottom section of the lattice boom of the PowerBoom system. This drastically increases the stability not only in the direction of the load but also to the side. The load capacity of long boom systems in particular can be increased dramatically by the P boom.

Operating with a luffing jib also allows massive load capacity increases to be achieved since the torsional moment is increased by the PowerBoom. This drastically extends the range of use of the crane.

In 2013 Liebherr received a design award from the International Construction Equipment Forum (ICEF) for its parallel PowerBoom system. The jury of experts particularly highlighted the economy and flexibility of the system in action.

The system is simple to retrofit - all crane operators require are two additional adapters. Standard intermediate lattice sections are used to form the parallel boom. The lattice sections installed in parallel are merged near the turntable using the lower P adapter and bolted to the crane. The upper P adapter reconnects the double boom. This enables the crane to achieve load capacities of the next higher crane class, delivering excellent value for money.

The parallel boom system is currently available for LR 11000, LR 11350 and LR 13000 cranes. The increase in load capacity has proved to be extremely effective on the compact 1000 tonne LR 11000 crane. Components from the luffing jib are used for the PowerBoom in this case. This keeps the sections of the main boom available for a particularly powerful luffing jib.
