Fendt: Quality for increasing expectations

For more than 10 years, Fendt has been relying on gear cutting machines and automation solutions from Liebherr. With the aid of Liebherr machines, it was possible to optimise the production processes at Fendt. Continuation training from trained personnel round off the co-operative relationship.

Since 2003, Fendt and Liebherr-Verzahntechnik have been working successfully together. Liebherr machines form the foundation for competitive and flexible production while maintaining the high level of quality. Fendt is the high-tech premium brand of the AGCO Corporation, which is one of the world's biggest manufacturers of tractors and agricultural machines. The factory in Marktoberdorf im Allgäu (Germany) makes up to 28,000 gearboxes every year.

Included among the equipment employed at the site are about 20 gear milling and gear shaping machines and a series of PHS-type automation solutions.

Process optimisation as demands rise

The sheer diversity of products in Fendt tractors requires a great amount of logistical effort. Almost 80 different components run through the machines in the transmission production area. With requirements becoming increasingly individual, the aim is to optimise the production processes. According to Michael Wißmüller, area leader of gear wheel and shaft production at Fendt, the challenge is in keeping retooling times as short as possible despite small batch sizes. The Liebherr machines reliably cover the broad spectrum of parts from Fendt thanks to the high availability. Important here is a modern control system as well as the flexible material flow technology.

Aside from the engineering demands, organisation and engagement play a big role. The fewest possible interfaces and clear responsibilities ensure optimum production conditions. Bernhard Riedel, responsible for managing production planning in the gear wheel, shaft and housing production area, summarises: “For the respective processes, we need firm partners and machines with a very long life cycle. We need a supplier who is as reliable as his products. This is the foundation for competitive production of the components.”

Trained personnel for safe processes

In addition, Liebherr offers regular training courses that provide an ideal supplement for the reliable technology and flexible organisation. For the automation systems, experienced programmers train future operators over a period of three weeks. For the gear cutting seminars, the Liebherr experts for grinding and cutting technology development and advice visit Fendt on-site. The aim of the seminars is to bring the high level of quality and the growing demands in harmony.
