Press releases | 12/07/2017 Great feedback from AusRAIL Plus 2017: The A 922 Rail Litronic railroader from Liebherr attracted plenty of interest

  • Operating weight 19.9 to 22.8 tonnes
  • Can be used either on the road or on railway tracks
  • Economical, powerful drive

In November, Liebherr exhibited at AusRAIL Plus, the southern hemisphere’s largest rail conference and exhibition, at the Brisbane Convention Centre. The A 922 Rail Litronic attracted plenty of interest from local and international visitors to the event. The A 922 Rail Litronic wheeled excavator has an operating weight of 19.9-22.8 tonnes and can be used as a railroader: either on the road or on railway tracks. The rail travel drive is mounted on either side of the undercarriage. During re-railing, the rail travel drive brings the tyres to rail level, so that the inner wheels of the dual tyres assume the travel drive on rail.

The A 922 Rail can be equipped with a rail guide for regular-width, and wide tracks or friction wheel rail guide for narrow tracks, depending on operating requirements. It sets the standard in its class for fuel efficiency and reliability.

Powerful Liebherr drive with easy maintenance

The A 922 Rail Litronic is powered by the 110 kW / 150 HP Liebherr diesel engine D 834 that complies with exhaust emissions stage IIIB. The exhaust gas treatment is effected by a diesel oxidation catalyst, while a particulate filter module can also be used if required.

The diesel engine drives a double hydraulic pump with a rated output of 2 x 215 litres per minute. Each pump can be controlled separately, for troublefree operation of tool attachments with an intensive power requirement, such as mulchers, trench cutting machines or hydraulic pile drivers. While one pump supplies power to the tool attachment, the other permits the railroader’s travel and working movements to be supplied separately. The A 922 Rail also impresses with its high lift capacities.

Liebherr HVI hydraulic oil is used as standard on the A 922 Rail, and is capable of an operating life of more than 6,000 hours. Instead of fixed oil-change intervals, these are determined by the results of an oil analysis carried out every thousand hours of operation or once a year. To prolong the lifetime of the hydraulic oil, and as a reliable service indicator, for the return filter a magnetic rod is installed in the hydraulic oil tank as a standard item, and can be easily removed and cleaned when necessary.

The large engine cover on the A 922 Rail opens to expose the entire right-hand side of the machine, providing fast, convenient access to all servicing points. Day-to-day maintenance can be carried out from ground level; reducing service time and providing a safer workspace. To clean the generously sized radiator, the powerful fan can simply be swung out forwards.

Comfortable double operator's cab

Operator performance is impacted by comfort and usability, the clear layout and comfort of the operator's cab of the A 922 Rail offers sufficient space for driver and co-driver. The windscreen can be slid up as a complete unit, and the touch screen display is intuitive to operate. The excavator also has proportional controls on both sides of the joysticks for operating all auxiliary hydraulic circuits. Standard features include an air-sprung, heated driver’s seat with the adjustable height and angle seat base, lumbar support, headrest, lap belt and ergonomically laid out control consoles that move with the seat. The high-quality standard equipment also includes automatic air-conditioning as well as speed control for enhanced comfort for longer road and rail journeys.

Occupational safety is extremely important in track construction. Among the standard safety equipment on the A 922 Rail are braked track wheels and pipe-burst protection for the lifting, luffing and stick cylinders. There are also standard cameras to monitor the areas to the side and rear of the machine with a separate display unit in the cab. The as-standard fully automatic central lubricating system avoids loss of working time due to the need to grease various points manually.

Higher productivity thanks to LIKUFIX

Besides a competent and experienced team, the use of efficient and versatile construction machines and the corresponding tool attachments is the key prerequisite for economical and timely realisation of ambitious projects. The A 922 Rail can be equipped with the optional fully automatic LIKUFIX quick coupler system for hydraulic tool attachments. These can be detached and picked up quickly and safely without the operator having to leave the cab. The deployment options of a hydraulic excavator and machine productivity can thus be increased by up to 30 %. The second proximity switch for LIKUFIX showcased at Bauma 2016, offers even greater safety when using tool attachments on the construction site.

Huge variety of attachments

A 3.4 m long luffing boom or a 3.6 m boom that can be repositioned laterally, are available as options. There are also dipper arms 1.85 m, 2.05 m, 2.25 m or 2.65 m long that have been specially designed for work below overhead wires.

Two different counterweights can be selected for the railroader. The benefit of the heavy counterweight is the up to 15 % higher lift capacity on the equipment side with only a slightly bigger swing radius.

For the Australian market, the A 922 Rail Litronic is equipped with a directional light on the undercarriage. If required, powerful LED lighting is available for the machine. As well as providing ample illumination, it is noted for its long life and low current consumption. With the corresponding attachments, the railroader can be approved according to DIN EN 15746.
