  • Into the future with Liebherr – optimizing driver safety by implementing automation elements
New technologies enable a very high degree of automation – all the way to an autonomous machine in the more distant future. These automation functions not only support our drivers in their present tasks, but will also enable new work processes in the future along with an increasing level of comfort and efficiency while reducing risks for the operators (e.g. video teleoperation). This automation technology is based in part on environment recognition and monitoring technologies, but it also requires new approaches in control programming and machine connectivity. In addition, new challenges await us as a manufacturer with regard to the applications and functionalities of our machines. We are currently working on the foundations for this future-oriented technology in our technology development projects, and we are building and validating initial prototype systems. Furthermore, new development methods are being applied, especially in the areas of machine environment simulation and control development.

  • Optimization of validation processes – “Digital Twin” project
A deep understanding of everything that happens inside the machine is a basic requirement for a robust, efficient and reliable construction machine. However, all these machine processes have to undergo acceptance and therefore be assured by our validation experts before delivery. In the future, a digital twin will make it possible to take all the physical interrelationships of the future machine into account right from the machine development stage, while also enabling validation during development to help cut out any loops. It will also be possible in the future, via a simulation on the digital twin, to have the machine “virtually” complete many thousands of operating hours and so prevent subsequent machine failure due to service life issues. This will help us in the continuous development of our products, and benefit our customers in their daily work.

    Developing Excellence!

In 2019 we launched the world’s first battery-driven drilling rig by replacing conventional diesel engines with a battery-electrical powertrain. Thus creating a trendsetting electro-hydraulic machine revolutionizing the construction machinery business. The benefits for our customers are obvious: local zero emission without any restrictions to performance and mobility. Without our well-educated and professional development team such a big step into the future of our business would have never been possible as they had to find solutions to unknown problems. Our developers had to think about selecting batteries, power electronics and motors into existing limits and frameworks of our machines. Therefore they have been faced with completely new tasks e.g. dimensioning of the battery capacity and power through analyzing telemetry-data and simulating. However, our vision will go further: a couple of developers are dealing with electrifying all rotatory drives including hoist, slewing and traveling gear. Their goal is to combine knowledge of various disciplines in order to create the best fully electric machines possible. To ensure the success of the story our developers have to take on responsibility and work proactive and self-contained. As you can see: at Liebherr our developers are putting all their passion and enthusiasm into their daily work in order to create leading innovations and shape technological progress: we are striving for excellence!

PowerBoom – innovatively raising load capacity

If you wanted to know the single most important feature of a crawler crane, “load capacity” would be the answer. But how can you increase the load capacity of an existing crane? The developers came up with the simple but effective idea of widening the boom using two existing lattice sections – the PowerBoom was born. This award-winning boom system enhancement is now available for the three largest crawler cranes from Ehingen. It shows that what in hindsight is a “simple” idea can develop into something extremely successful.
