Liebherr-Transportation Systems carries out a project commissioned by the German Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt, Dessau-Roßlau) under the framework of the environment research program of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety. Subject of the investigation is testing, measuring and evaluation of air conditioning systems using natural refrigerants for a sustainable heating and cooling of public transport.

All measurements and analyses are carried out on a test train (ICE 3 model 403, 1st series) which is provided by Deutsche Bahn (German National railway operator) using state-of-the-art technologies.

The project aims to determine the energy consumption of the system over the entire life cycle under real operating conditions over all seasons. On that basis conclusions can be drawn on the competitiveness of air conditioning systems with the natural refrigerant air compared to conventional systems.
